I'll add him to one of my credit cards but as everyone here said it will take a month for him to have a score. But the problem still stands we need a place to live at the end of June. We were just denied by another apartment complex because they could not verify his background.

Have you tried renting only with your info and just adding him as occupant? Will they need a background check for him if he’s just an occupant?

It worked for us 2 years ago in KY.

In MN at least whoever is occupying the unit needs a background check.

When we applied to our apartment, I told them in advance that the SSN was new. So when it didn't return anything for the credit, they understood why. I had more than one complex in our apartment search tell us that no credit is better than bad credit. I also gave his Brazilian license as an ID instead of his passport to prove his identity. I think it helped establish that they wouldn't expect to have anything in the system. We didn't have any problems since at least one of us had good credit and the lease terms makes us both liable for the cost of the apartment. We have run into problems getting utilities in his name, but they each told us they could add him to the account after we had the account established for a couple of months.

Just rent privately, as in, someone who just owns one house or apartment as is renting it out.

People generally bend over backwards to help British /Scandinavian immigrants.  Perhaps you guys need to change how you are presenting, because it sounds like they are just trying to find a reason...

For the first time since hubby moved here on Fiancé visa we are moving. Unfortunately everytime we apply the background check companies always have a tough time with his info and can't validate him and his records. We always supply his social security card, state ID, and green card. He doesn't have any criminal history in US or UK.

Any other LPRs face these issues?

It's been going on for years, why haven't you worked on a solution before?

"The background check was very thoroughly performed by the United States embassy in London, where multiple senior consular personnel concluded that he was eligible and qualified for admission to the United States.  This background check included the sources that you use plus many others that required top-secret security clearance.  Now on which line does he sign your rental application?"

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Love it! Not to mention he was background checked during each immigration application: fiance visa, AOS, ROC, and citizenship.

We talked to a lawyer about this. He said there isn't one database that has all the information; it's all public records and depends on how shallow or thorough the check is. The more shallow and cheap it is, the more trouble it will have. He's had background checks recently for jobs where he's cleared them in 3 days with no trouble. It all depends on the company.

I have good credit. He doesn't have any yet. The most recent apartment we applied for I explained the situation. Hopefully this one will be more intelligent.

I meant he had plenty of time to get a credit card/establish a credit file. If thru do a background check, there's most probably going to be a credit check.

Has he started driving lesson, I know you were waiting for him to get his citizenship to allow him to drive - he must be happy to teach this milestone! Congratulations to both of you and good luck with the apartment search.

Citizenship for driving?  Dear gods why?

Well, how fortuitous for him that he’ll have as much freedom as a North Dakotan 14 year old now.
