@kcoyclay1 can you share more about the no need for interview letter you got? Was that from your local FO or was that from the (regional) service center? I also filed an I-485 AOS for my mom (from B2 tourist which I'm assuming is also what you did for your mom) and her I-485 status is showing awaiting appointment by local field office. I'm wondering if the no interview letter you got is because your mother is elderly unlike mine who is under 60?

I was hoping that she would not need an interview in person as our I-485 package had all our necessary tax transcripts as well as the medicals already. My concern revolves around how long we would have to wait due to the I-485 interview backlog.

Thanks for sharing.

I had received a courtesy letter from the National Benefit Center for evidence (Medical Report) which we deliberately did not do until asked as I did not know how long the process would take and did not want the medical to expire should the process be over a year. The letter stated: "If you receive an interview notice, you must bring the information and evidence required to your interview appointment . . . If your case does not require an interview, you will receive a Request for Evidence with further instructions". I received the latter, so I knew mom was not going to get an interview. As your mom's status is showing that she is awaiting appointment by local office, it means she will be interviewed. As per USCIS parents and minor are not normally interviewed - key word being normally -  but I personally know of a mother who was interviewed a year after filing, and it took a year after the interview for her to get her green card. She was on a B2 visa as well and she is in her 50s. My sister was not interviewed when her son filed for her and his dad but my brother- in-law was interviewed as a formality; it was quick and easy. He got an interview within 3 months after the application. My sister waited over a year before getting her green card with no interview. So I guess it all depends on the officer who is handling the case. I hope it will be quick for your mom. Don't forget to post each activity so that others can follow the timeline and learn from your experience. I will let you guys know when the card is received. All the best.

@kcoyclay1 thanks for replying and sharing your experience. And congrats on your mom receiving her green card without an interview. Oddly, my mom's I-130 which was filed 5 months before I filed her I-485 was never sent to the local FO even after her I-485 showed "Ready for FO to schedule interview".

I have always been under the impression that the adjudication responsibility of an I-130 belongs to a local FO once an I-485 is filed (albeit not concurrently).

Can I ask one last question about your case? Was your mom's I-130 approved by service center or was it sent to the NY FO for adjudication? Congrats again

Hi ultrasoul,

Thank you.

My mom’s file was sent to Federal Plaza for approval. I received both approval letters in the same envelop and the address at the bottom of the notice stated that it came from the National Benefit Center, PO Box 648003, Lee’s Summit MO 64002.

It takes a bit longer when an interview is to be scheduled. I know of someone who petitioned for her mom in November 2016, had her interview in November 2017, and received her green card in November 2018. Hope the process goes through sooner for you and your mom.

I have separate petitions for mom and dad at NVC. Will they get seperate interviews when they reach that stage since petitions are different? Is there a way to make sure they get interview on the same day?

My mom got approved on the 23rd July immediately they got the DNA test result.  We have our case at the NVC. I have paid the required fees but we got another RFE at the NVC stage. Apparently they do not accept the handwritten pink and white birth certificates fom Ghana anymore. So I have to apply for the electronic one from GH. Hopefully, I will have it in 2 weeks. Did any one else from Ghana have issues with their birth certificates?
