Oh no, it just has the extra leg up of touching the US. Not very helpful if OP is in Texas and he is in Northern Canada, but you get the idea.

Would you happen to know what to do if we don't know his mother's information? He doesn't know her middle name or birthdate (she hasn't been in the picture since he was 8.)

Put her name exactly as it appears on his birth certificate.  Then put "unknown" for middle name and birthdate, and have him write a letter stating that he does not know and attach it to the form, refer to it in "additional information" section of the form.  Have his letter notarized if you want to or a statement on it that it is true and correct to the best of his knowledge under penalty of perjury.

No, but we don't want to get married first. It seems like it would be difficult to get the marriage application and decide what to do to get married before any paperwork. It no longer seems to be a faster route from what I've read.

Im a little lost? It seems more difficult to get married first? I understand not wanting to live apart after marriage, first yearish of my marriage kinda sucked for that. But i would have driven my husband batty not being able to work or drive or be an independent person for 6 months.  Lol.  He'd have been on VJ, "how do i ship her back?!" Lmao.

Best wishes on your K1 journey.

The details about his mother should be on his long form birth certificate. He has to contact État civil, or order it online.

If she's francophone, she probably has multiple first names, but no middle name.

If your fiancé is used to work, travel, drive, and be independent, you might want to consider the spousal visa.  Each visa has + and - , make sure to compare to see what fits your situation better.

I was able to work, convert my driver's license, buy property, right away... Be insured under my husband's insurance as soon as we married, so I didn't need travel insurance anymore. We visited each other every other week or so.

Unless he has children to bring to the US with the K1 I strongly advise that you research the spousal visa before committing. You may not want to get married first but the AOS period of the K1 will severely test your relationship. If you can marry and see each other regularly while you wait for spousal visa approval it will be much better than living under the strained conditions of K1 adjustment.

I can only second researching about the CR-1 spousal visa. I've seen multiple threads on VJ of K-1 folks who later said they wish they had done the spousal visa instead. Be sure to read up about the pros and cons between the two before you jump head first into your visa journey.

We just saw each other for two weeks but weren't working on anything for immigration at the time. He just got hired at a new job today and I used all of the annual time I have for now. If we married first, we would have to wait until we both have sufficient time off of work to get together and do it - which could put the entire process on hold for a few months. We could not work on a single thing for immigration until then. If we start the k-1 now, we can get a significant portion of the wait time done until we can see each other. We do live close enough to NYC to meet up. but he has limited finances and inconsistent work shifts to arrange that.

Most everyone here can relate to your desire to be together sooner.  Yes, the K1 visa route is the better option if that is your priority.  Just be aware that taking that option will mean that your future husband will not be able to work for 4 to 6 months after your AOS/EAD/AP filing after your wedding.  If both of you are prepared for the emotional and financial impact that might have on your marriage, then I say, "Good luck on your K1 visa journey!" ☺️

If you have a few hundred dollars and 24 hours off at the same time, you can do a quick wedding, in Canada or the USA. Wishing you the best.
