Real popular in Ga. As you pointed out probably designed for our climate. Occasionally the emergency part of it kicks on. ( heat strips)

They are different.  But polar vortexes have always existed, we just dont hear about them til they  to break up and send cold air southward from time to time.

Well, your country does things a bit different from the US.  

 

Wiki it.  There is a slight difference.  I think the term became more of a household word in 2014 or so, thanks to the media.

 

I prefer the term ex-wife vortex.  Not as catchy though...

We would have benefitted from electric heat the past two days as we had a natural gas emergency here in SE Michigan that required us to turn down the furnace to the low sixties.  I know this doesn't sound like much, but the low sixties when it is -6F outside feels frigid. Thankfully, the issue with the distribution system for the gas has been mitigated (the pumping station had a fire) and we are back in the 70s inside.

I work a lot with Natural Gas

 

What kind of emergency would they want you to turn it down?  Low supply of Nat gas?

Probably the same reason they name major snow storms now: to make the weather-man's 5 minute segment more exciting. I remember when "winter storm Gandolf" came through ND in 2012-2013-ish. I'm just waiting for them to name one "MacGyver" (not referencing the new guy on CBS because there is only 1 Richard Dean Anderson) and I can die happy.

 

Either that or the guys in charge have all been watching too many Syfy channel B-Movies!

Not a supply issue, but rather they could not get the supply out due to a fire at a major compressor location.

Agreed. I just used the term in the title of this thread to poke fun at the hysteria over it. On another note a heat wave will be starting today in WI with temperatures in the teens and talk of 40s by the end of the weekend. Time to get the shorts out again.
