Denied I-551 Stamp

Hello All,

This is my first post, but I have enjoyed the help of this website for years now.  The removal of conditions on our I-751 is pending.  Her green card will expire (with the one year extension) on Oct 15th.  It appears many people are in the same situation.  Her passport was expired so we went to the Ukrainian Embassy and are now waiting for it to be renewed with her surname changed.  We scheduled an appointment at our local USCIS chapter with hopes for them to stamp an I-94 with an I-551.  They sent us away and said there was nothing they could do.  Has anyone experienced anything similar?  Our story has been very smooth up to this point, but now we are getting nervous.  Her driver license will expire and it appears there is nothing we can do.

Without a passport you should be issued proof of status on an I94. You require a photo for this. You are not required to maintain or hold a foreign passport when you are in the US as a LPR, and this is why this option exists.

 

Go back, and ask for a supervisor or someone who has a clue what they are doing.

No need for passport. You can (and imo should) get the I-94 stamp, bring 2 passport-sized photos. +1 for the supervisor suggestion

You should've been able to get the stamp on the I-94 form.

 

Anyway - when did she apply for a passport? It doesn't take long right now - I applied in August, 13 and the passport was received by the Embassy on Sept., 12.  So-so a month.

And since you can track a passport issuance  on-line, the Embassy doesn't always let you know the passport is ready for pick up. Very often, even if you were told they 'd call you,  they still expect you to keep checking the status - once it states the document has arrived, you can plan the trip to get it. 

 

Also,  there is a question, a little bit off the topic, but if you don't mind me asking -  was the last name  changed in her interior passport? Because without this there is no way an International passport can be issued under new last name. And any change in the interior passport can be done only in Ukraine - Embassy doesn't do that.
