Removing K-1 2 yr Green Card Conditions

I have tried looking the info up on the forums and in the guides, but I still have questions. My husband's 2 yr green card expires in May of 2019. How early can I file for removal of conditions? When do most people file? What happens if his green card expires while we are still waiting on an answer? Thank you everyone!

90 days before the green card expires, the filing window opens.

You can file 90 days prior to expiration.  Once filed, he will receive an extension letter which will extend the date of expiration date on the card by 18 months.

Thank you guys so much! So, is that a letter he needs to carry with him everywhere? Or will it be a small card like his green card?

Approving it in 90 days would be a miracle. It is currently taking over a year for approvals for Removing Conditions. In the meantime, you husband will get an extension letter extending the validity of his green card for 18 months. It used to be an extension for 12 months but the process is taking so long now that they extended the extension.

He doesn't need to constantly carry it on his person, but when he travels he should definitely have it with him.

It will likely take at least a year for approval.

So then, the green card extension applies to everything right? He can leave the country and come back, work the same as normal, correct? Also, what sort of information/proof should I provide? We don't have enough credit/income yet to buy a house (that's what I get for living out of the country and being self-employed).

Correct, he can travel, work, continue as normal.

The letter changes the expiration date.  The aspects of the Green Card remain.

He does live in the US, correct?

Yes, we both live here. We aren't able to visit Nicaragua this year due to all of the uprisings. We are hoping to go in the next year or two. I was hoping that wouldn't make it impossible. When his dad died, he was in that period where he was in between K-1 visa and the work visa/ green card, so he couldn't go. I'm just trying to make sure we can continue life as normal

Should I make the biometric amounts and filing fee separate checks or just one?
