Hi all,

I'm wanting to sponsor my fiance. I just started a new full-time job last week. How long do I have to be employed before I can be a sponsor? Does it matter as long as I have a job that meets the minimum income requirements?

I can't answer your question as I am rusty on the K1 but I want to give you an advice. The K1 is more expensive than the CR1 and he/she won't be able to work for almost 6 months after he/she arrives. If money is tight, I'd suggest marrying and then file for CR1. That way when they arrive they have their Green Card and are ready to work right away. Otherwise, you will be paying for the entire K1 process, Adjustment of Status and Removal of Conditions which is several $1000.

Have you already submitted your petition (i129f)? The wait right now is so long that it'll be a good 7-9 months until you need to prove that you can support him/her, so if you haven't even done that yet I wouldn't worry about it.

The best advice ever!

I was a K1 myself (Now currently waiting for AOS to be approved)

If I could turn back time I would have 10000% done CR1. If I had only known what I know now! Please explore both avenues.

In in my opinion CR1 is far superior.

SECOND THIS! Totally would have done CR-1 with the time frame that this K-1 is taking, when it's all said and done, I believe our POE will be at the 11 months mark.. a month or two more and less money I could have had him here able to work right away

Its a horrible process, right?! When was your NOA1/NOA2?

Our k1 was received early January 2017 and our NoA2 was late September 2017. POE was December 21st 2017

And now here I am - Still unable to work, visit my family back home. It’s definitely tough! I feel like the CR1 would have been a lot better for me personally.

Ahh so sad to hear.. even you a year ago almost taking a full year to just be with your fiance. We were under the impression that it was 6 months and that's the only reason why we went this route was to be together sooner. Our NOA1: 10/27 NOA2: 5/29 (We did have an RFE that delayed the process a month) and now in Ready status at the embassy waiting for Packet 3 for  2 weeks, no interview even scheduled yet :( I would anticipate now that it's the end of July he wouldn't be able to schedule an interview until end of August or September at this rate.. almost a full year

And WOW, 7 months and still no Work Visa or AP?? That's very disheartening, I know that is one thing we want to hopefully get soon is the AP just for him to be able to visit his family within 6 months of arriving to the US

I did feel like that before. However, when I think about it again, I don't think I will be able to do CR1. Spouse visa allowed you to work right away, but the waiting time is way longer. I don't like waiting without him by my side. We choose K-1 Visa because we were thinking the process is much more shorter than spouse visa and if the K-1 Visa was denied, we can either file another K-1 Visa again or get married and file for spouse visa. We can't do that if we apply spouse visa from the beginning. Aside from that, being with him as soon as my goals. But yeah, in terms of cost and not able to work, K-1 is more expensive and bored.

Hi all,

I'm wanting to sponsor my fiance. I just started a new full-time job last week. How long do I have to be employed before I can be a sponsor? Does it matter as long as I have a job that meets the minimum income requirements?

I started a new job 2 months prior to filing. I'm still in the waiting process. I wasnt concerned as I'm well above the minimal  threshold.

They added 5 days onto everyone’s accepted on NOA1

I've heard CR1 can take years and years. I spoke with my fiance about it and he still recommends K1. I honestly don't know much about immigration law or visas.

K-1 is taking 8-12 months currently. CR-1 is taking ~12-16 months on average.

The CR-1 was backlogged by a couple years several years ago. But that's not the case now.

It does not take "years and years", it's a few more months than K1 but far superior.
