Hello,

 

My boyfriend was given a nickname by his father during his childhood and still uses it to this day.  This nickname (or alias) is NOT USED in any legal documents.  However, his FB page, for example, is under this nickname/alias; if you go to his neighborhood, and even at work, and ask for him using his formerly given name, people won't even know who you are referring to, but if you ask for him by nickname/alias...you know the rest! Sooooooo, on I-129F, I did write his nickname/alias.  However, will this be considered grounds to submit additional paperwork?

No need really. If it isn't anything legal then doesn't matter really. My husband has gone by Zian since he was like 12. He's Zian to all his friends, co-workers, and such; but that isn't his legal or real name. We never mentioned it. His FB page is under Zian as well as in texts I called him Zian. Made no difference cause again it isn't an 'official or legal' name, simply a nickname.

You need to send his name. Nicknames are something unofficial as far as I know and therefore official legal papers require your legal name on it. No nicknames no fun names.

Exactly, legal papers have to have legal names. As far as FB, WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage it doesnt matter. In fact my nick name in FB is Bruce Willis

Not really. His name is used between the people he knows but it is not recognized by official institutions because it was never officially changed to be his "real" name. So there wouldn't be a need to even write it down because they are talking about officially changed names (example. you go to the judge and change your name or you marry and you change your last name to your husband's name).

List the nickname.

Everyone knows him by that name and the forms specifically ask for all other names used. 

If he didn't use the nickname as his main name then I would say no but as that is the name he works under and grew up using then that is more then just a nickname.

He should also get list it when he gets his police clearance.

No, i do not think so. Does he use his nickname as the legal name at work, as in, is it what is in his employment letter, in his pay check? Is the name in his bank records? Is it in his driving license? If not, I do not believe he has to list it.

 

If William Jefferson Clinton was petitioning for someone, would he even list Bill as a name anywhere?

His nickname/alias DOES NOT appear ANYWHERE in paper/written format, EXCEPT FB profile and how he responds/answers to 'verbally.'

Example: James "Jimmy"  Dean,  same as with William that often is nicknamed Bill, William "Bill" Shatner. 

That's how I would do it if I would petition my husband who has a nickname everyone knows him by. Which is very common here in the South.

Also, in the I-129f, first page 7a-c  says "provide all other names you have used including aliases, maiden names and nicknames"

The form asks for any other names used, including nicknames. The best advice for completing the form is "interpret the question literally and answer it honestly".

I have a nickname that people knows me by but because it is NOT a legal name, it was never listed. I went through the K1 and got approved.

You asked if it would be considered grounds to submit additional paperwork. I actually did list a legal name that I have had before, and I never sent any additional paperwork with the I-129F. It was never asked for later on either. So with a nickname I think you're absolutely fine just listing the name.
