You know what I like about America btw, they don't have those stupid speeding cameras.

In the Netherlands I was paying about $  1200 a year on fines. It was driving me insane when I saw one of those envelopes on my doormat.

And I wasn't even speeding that much, maybe 5 miles on top of the maximum speed limit. But everytime I got flashed.

Actually they do. Just depends where you are. Municipalities love them as revenue generators.

So you’re one of those immigrants who came to America thinking our laws don’t matter, eh?

i got one in like 2000 i think.

more relevant to me is all the wealthy people i know who drive however they please, because the fines are not an issue. one came very close to losing his license (almost killed someone) but had a good lawyer and just got more fines. he paid way more for the lawyer..

I got one (speeding ticket) back around 1985.  Since then I have always had the best radar detector money can buy.  A good laser jammer helps also.

So let me get this straight. Some of you want fine amounts to be tied to a person's income rather than the offense they commit. Putting aside all the false equal income arguments this would not work from a practical standpoint. In some states (not even nationwide) millions of traffic tickets are issued every year and over 95% of them are paid without a court appearance. Even so there is a massive backlog in the court system. Now imagine if those 95% of cases that don't even make it to a court room all of a sudden have to have a court look at the offender's income and determine what their fine is. It would be chaos. Just like most leftist ideas. They sound good (to the wealth equality crowd anyways) on paper but in reality are the least practical ideas you could come up with.

The other thing I want to address is I saw some comments implying that most wealthy people inherit their wealth. Again that notion doesn't align with the facts at all. Studies show a vast majority of wealthy people today are first generation. The moral of this story is don't hate someone because they worked hard and earned more money than you. I am not envious of those who have more money than me. If they worked hard to get where they are I admire them and want to learn how they did it.

Yes sir!!

No, but it occurred to me that I still drive the same, but I haven't got a ticket ever since I moved to America.

Hope I didn't just jinx myself

The argument of backlogs and the burden on the courts was presented, but some here think it would be no biggie.  (The rest of us know better).

Good point on the source of the wealth.  Some who have not think it’s unfair that some have, and they want all to be equal.  Others realize that having is nice, and work towards that goal.

Maybe we need a tiered/sliding system.  Poor folks who live off subsidies get paid 0.5X the fine.  Poor folk who are scraping by without the gubmint, they pay 1.0X.  Middle class, they pay 1.75X the base rate.  Anyone making over $100K has to pay 3X, and anyone over $200K per year just pays an automatic 10X.  To save on time, we will issue ID cards which are color coded to indicate the level of payout (will liberals agree to an income ID?  They don’t want it for voting, so...).  But it COULD work, right?

Well, they sure are sleeping. I see tons of driver's doing weird stuff on the road. No policemen around..

Yeah, that was really ridiculous. I would be driving back home late at night and next thing I know is: smile, you're caught on camera!!

FYI, I'm a very cautious driver. They just like to ticket driver's in the Netherlands.

The other problem I see with income based fines is police departments have already been caught issuing quotas to traffic officers. I could see those officers specifically targeting those who look like they have a higher income to meet their quotas quicker. By the way police departments do get a cut of the fines they issue so that would incentivize the profiling of wealthy people even more.

By the way I have seen comments about traffic cameras. Not to get too far off topic but basically all traffic camera tickets are easy to beat in court but most people are unaware if this. There are multiple due process violations with the way these tickets are issued which people have successfully raised in court. This is why some states have ruled traffic cameras to be unconstitutional. The crazy thing is some if these states continue using them even after their court system ruled them to be unconstitutional.

A friend of mine is a police officer, not in America, but apparently they have the same methods; they do have quota they need to meet. Especially at the end of the year ;-)

Here they charge $40 for speeding camera tickets. I'm not going to take a day off work and lose either money or vacation time over $40. They do spend time figuring out where to set the amount. If it was $150, many people would fight it. They know for many people paying $40 is the lesser of 2 evils.
