They absolutely can not work, it is illegal and huge no-no, and they absolutely are not eligible for any medical coverage here unless it's paid by them in full. Tourists are tourists, they are not permanent residents, and have they rights to say they are to get any job or coverage here.

I guess I'm not understanding why it's for up to 5 yrs if they can only stay 6 months. Or they can come back but not til like a year later after they return to their country?

Tourist visa is for short stay. Be careful with it. It's very easy to earn a ban and be enable to enter the US next time for 5 or 10 years.

Read the law. Valid for 5 years means that they can enter within 5 years. They can not stay even 6 months, it's very suspicious because immigration officer will think they work here illegally otherwise where is the money? They can do short visits up to 2-3 months and go home for a year and then try to come back for a few months again. This is HOW it works, not they way you think.

You are going to a club that opens at 10pm and closes at 3am.

 

This doesn't mean you have to stay there for the whole duration. 

 

You are mistaken validity for duration.

 

The visa is good for 5 years, which means within a five-year frame, your parents could come to the US as a SHORT TERM visitor multiple times. It doesn't authorise them to stay for 5 years.

Even if you have a visa, you can still be denied entry at the border, at the discretion of the customs official. 

If they are constantly going back and forth, basically determined at the border that they are "visiting" their home country once in a while instead of the other way around (visiting the States) then they can be denied entry even though they hold a valid visa.

Legally,  can they stay for up to 6 months on a tourist visa?  Yes.

 

Is it wise to stay for 6 months on a tourist visa?  No.

 

Legally, is their visa valid for 5 years?  Yes.

 

Does having a valid visa mean they are guaranteed entry for the full 5 years?  No.

Visitor visas are great, but they can be dangerous if misused......it's good that you are asking questions now.

Considering they live in another country, they probably won't want to come for a full 6-month vacation anyhow....think about the expense that would be for them, not to mention up keeping their home while away, any employment they may have, etc.  

 

It's good to ask and know the laws surrounding tourist visas.  Have they said how long they wish to visit the US for?
