Carson equates slaves to immigrants, social media blasts comment

A NYT column today likened the 'slaves as immigrants' analogy of Dr. Carson comment to his having gone on to opine people pushed out of windows are lucky because they get to experience flight, and the homeless are lucky because all they need is a cardboard box to become homeowners. Perhaps those are closer to the mark than the Holocaust.

In Carson's defense I'll say that he didn't say the slaves were illegal immigrants, given none of them had passports of visas for entering the U.S.

Just a quick comment on the holocaust because I refuse to keep talking about this silly Carson thing. In regards to Jews having hopes and dreams, of course they did, otherwise why bother trying to survive and live through all that if you don't have the hope that one day things will be better for you and your families? how many survivor stories have you gotten to listen to? Cause I've listened to many of them and trust me in all of them they talk about their aspirations and dreams for them and their family for a better future. Just like the slaves had. In regards to anything supposedly going over my head or me missing any points I don't miss points, it often happens that when I reply to someone and they apparently actually misunderstand my reply and the context it is in then they think I misunderstood them. I assure you that doesn't happen so no worries. Same thing in regards to history being lost on some people, although I do agree that happens unfortunately, actually it's lost to many people, but I don't happen to be one of them..

 

Yes some Jews were moved from other countries, however not all(unlike all slaves). They had camps all over the place so usually they didn't have to move people very far. Even when they did though, for one, most of them ended up going back to their original countries, or to Israel or the US after the war, they didn't stay like many of the slaves did, and secondly, say you had people from Denmark, who were taken to Auschwitz, and ended up staying in and starting a new family in Poland(which again was rare) if a Polish politician would have said the following, I'd have no issue with it:

 

That’s what Poland is about, a land of dreams and opportunity,” XXXXX told hundreds of federal employees Monday.

“There were other immigrants who came crammed in cattle cars, who were sent to their death and to work even longer, even harder, for nothing, but they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land,” XXXXX added. 

As long as he acknowledges they came crammed in cattle cars, much like Carson acknowledged they came in the bottom of ships, I don't see a need to be all up in arms about the particular phrasing of it. To me that's just nit picking and no "words matter" empty mantra is going to change that. This is all just silliness like I said, all Carson said was that the slaves that came on the ship basically later on became immigrants, yes I know these were not his words but they are my interpretation of it. Anyway I'm sliding back into this issue which I really don't wanna talk about so if you guys wanna get your panties in a bunch over what Carson said you go right ahead but I'd much rather save my energy for more important things so I'll see ya round in other more useful threads.
