Fidel Castro, who led his native Cuba for nearly half a century and was the world's third longest-serving head of state, has died at the age of 90.

With a shaking voice, his younger brother, Raul Castro, announced on state television that the Communist revolutionary died on Friday night.

World leaders have paid tributes to the revolutionary, who came to power in 1959 and survived an estimated 600 assassination attempts, with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev praising him for 'strengthening' his island nation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described him as a 'symbol of an era', and said he was a 'distinguished statesman'.

Raul Castro, who succeeded his brother in 2006, told Cubans in the television announcement: 'Today, November 25, at 10.29pm, the Commander in Chief of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, passed away.

'In compliance with the expressed will of Companion Fidel, his remains will be cremated.'

He concluded his statement by saying: 'Onward to victory.'

"Today, the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades. Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.

While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve.

Though the tragedies, deaths and pain caused by Fidel Castro cannot be erased, our administration will do all it can to ensure the Cuban people can finally begin their journey toward prosperity and liberty. As bad and as Fidel Castro might well be, I can't help but thinking the average Cubans still have it better than much of South America, or even Mexico. Strange how the type of government, seems to have such a bearing on how a dictator is perceived by Americans.

Have you been to Cuba and S. America? I haven't, but even the capital city of Cuba seems extremely poverty-ridden. This article is pretty enlightening...again, I don't know how bad it is in the rest of South/Central America, but it's hard to believe that it's better in Cuba. Is it really this bad in Cuba, I wonder?

I'm going off of statistics. Cuban life expectancy at birth: 79.07 years (2012). Haitian life expectancy at birth:62.7 years (2012). Colombian life expectancy:73.78 years. US life expectancy at birth: 78.74 years.

While I have no data on violent crime in Cuba, I have never read about or spoke with anyone who claims that violent crime is a problem in Cuba. The rest of South America not so much. I would also add, that while it may be true that doctors in Cuba earn very low wages, the fact remains that access to health care in Cuba is not a problem. I have known a lot of people who have traveled to Cuba and some of them have mentioned the poverty in Cuba, but not one of them believes that Cuba is anywhere near as bad other countries in the region.

Cuba certainly does have its problems, nobody can are argue that fact, however, Cuba has been at the receiving end of decades of economic sanctions, which might account for some of the countries problems.

Actually, now that I think about it, you're right. Cuba seems to be lacking the black market drug economy that plagues other South/Central American countries. That's probably one of the reasons for the higher life expectancy among other things, as well as the seemingly lower violent crime.

I totally agree about the sanctions. In general, I don't get sanctions. They end up hurting the ordinary people more than the government figures that they are aimed at.
