AMHERST, Mass.

A Massachusetts college is removing the American flag from its campus.

Days after the election, someone burned the American flag at Hampshire College in Amherst.

The school then put up a new flag and lowered it to half-staff, in solidarity with those fearing a Donald Trump presidency.

That sparked backlash from those who see the flag as a symbol for all that is great about America.

School leaders have decided to remove it entirely.

"If we could remove the conflict over the symbol and get to the real issues underneath, there would be a chance for real learning," Jonathan Lash, president of Hampshire College said.

The reaction on campus to the decision to remove the flag has been mixed.

"It's been used as a symbol to ostracize people, but I also stand with people," a student said. "As the son of a veteran (I) recognize the value of the flag as a symbol for the country and what it can stand for."

I agree, it appears as if many colleges in the country are treating students like 1st graders, they are doing nothing but raising a generation of wimps

It starts before college though. If you helicopter your kid to death or don't care to raise your kids and be an actual parent... this is what we're left with.

I find the bolded part to be a huge factor in what the kids are becoming today. We have a large amount of absentee parents who want the schools to do most of the parenting and supply most of the child's nutrition for them. Irony is these parents are usually the first to complain about everything without lifting a finger to help. Laziness at it's best.

Huh?

Helicopter parenting, in which we must handhold our kids so much and make all decisions for them, that we neither allow them to learn to be their own persons, or to learn from making mistakes, or even forgiving them for such mistakes = turns child into a psychological mess unable to cope with decisions, must continue to let parents decide for them, or collapse under intense pressure and seek escape into other non-constructive ways of humanity.

Or

non involved parent = breed the kid, dump the kid on someone else to deal with and raise, and wonder why kid is traumatized, emotionally detached, unable to cope, and doesn't understand how to live. We should neither be suffocating helicopter parents nor be a parent that just fails to show up.

These two things are some of the reasons why kids grow up into adults that cannot function well.

Maybe it's not a popular opinion but I think a lot of the absentee parenting is sometimes a result of the the working mom and high divorce rate. My parents divorced when I was 9 and I definitely felt at times that there was a huge lack of guidance during my teenage years due to my mom being too busy at work or trying to find a new boyfriend/husband. My dad ended up moving three hours away so he basically wasn't in the picture on a day to day basis. Of course moms should be allowed to work, I'm not saying we need to go back to the dark ages, but the idea of the mom having to be the sole or main breadwinner puts a huge constraint on being a mom, which is already an intensely hard job.

When I compare my upbringing to my husband's (who comes from a very loving, large family with married parents and has his grandparents even still around) it's s stark contrast. I'm not sure the absenteeism is always about laziness...and I certainly don't blame my parents, I'm glad they got divorced because they were a terrible match. But when I look back on it, the absentee/laissez-faire parenting can definitely be a problem. It's all about the balance between that and helicoptering. But the whole situation is kind of complex, I'm a bit skeptical to just blame the parents...I think there are greater factors at play a lot of the times.

my mom and dad never divorced, are still together. my mom never worked outside the home my entire childhood.and i played both of them like a fiddle for the entirety of my teenage years. just saying, the grass is always greener. helicoptering in this instance speaks more to the college's administration than to their students, imo.
