This topic is a Current Event at this time of the year in many parts of the country. If a person has either witnessed or seen the aftermath of a collision between a large animal and a fast-moving motor vehicle, you know it is very current event. IMO.

Can one get these tags on the scene, or otherwise in time before the meat goes bad?

From what I can remember, the police in Michigan can issue the kill tag on the spot. Although I remember one time my buddy loading the deer up in his truck then having to go back to the police office to get the tag. Maybe the officer didn't have any with him, but either way it was still good and didn't take too much time.

I hit a deer back in 2005 driving up to the house I used to have in New Hampshire. I was going about 40mph at the time and it darted right out of the woods in front of me, bounced off my front end and landed on the side of the road. It did a fair amount of damage to the front end of my Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I had to have towed because it was not drivable. The cop that arrived on scene offered to give me a ride to my house which was only 6 miles away, but first he had to call people on the "roadkill list" and make sure the deer carcass was removed from the roadside. He got in touch with one of the locals on the roadkill list and within 20 minutes two guys showed up in a pick up truck, threw the carcass in the back of the truck and left. On the ride home the cop said that deer would probably feed those guys for a good chunk of the winter.

It is a dangerous season for us here, I have a client who has hit 7 (!) deer, at different times on the same stretch of road

and lived to tell about it.

In Alaska, you have to call the state troopers, who will then call someone from a list who are certified to collect the carcass. Most of the meat goes to the local natives, if at all possible.

The odds of me hitting a deer in Iowa are almost nil, as I don't live in Iowa. *rimshot*

But seriously, even when I did live in Iowa for 3.5 years, the odds were slim, as I didn't own a car. *rimshot #2*

That said, I know a half dozen Iowans that have hit a deer in recent years.
