On a more positive note she has a sponsor to take care of her financial needs.

And to that, I say, "Thanks, US gov."

Generally, a person or couple must pay into the system in order to benefit from the system. To be eligible for social security retirement benefits, a person must have 40 work quarters. IF you are the petitioner, you guarantee to reimburse any means-base benefits that your mother would receive. You should be financially responsible for your parents.

Why should US taxpayers have to support foreign nationals who have never paid into the system?

No was just wondering ....because I heard from couple of known people that their grand mother or father never worked in USA, neither their spouses worked in USA...and still getting benefits ....wondering how and why?

Many people get SSI and never worked a day in their lives. Some legit some doing SSI fraud.

You don't have to pay into Social Security to reap the benefits. Now retirement is a pay in. But benefits Nope some get it. Why you think its almost bankrupt. People getting unemployment exhausted so now they are claiming SSI benefits. SMHranting33va.gif

There are some benefits for spouses, so if one worked but the other didn't, the one that didn't can get benefits, piggybacking on the other's work.

Why should US taxpayers have to support foreign nationals who have never paid into the system?

Hmmmm, very interesting question... and, to re-phrase: why do foreign nationals have to pay into Medicare fund when they are barred from receiving the same for 5 years? And, why do US taxpayers have to pay for education of undocumented immigrants? Why do US taxpayers have to "sponsor" Walmart employees? So many whys.

US taxpayers support foreign nationals all over the world every single day, little help to our less fortunate residents doesn't cost as much as letting big corporations continue with their creative way of avoiding US taxes...anyhow, don't get me wrong, I don't support any giveaways but we need reforms on so many levels.

Actually if she had moved to the UK she may well have been quids in.

The OP mentioned she had a business still operating in India in another thread, was heading back to close it down. No idea haw India manages these things but that should be her first port of call.

Well, if she runs a business at home, then that's the place for her. She can live off the proceeds of that then, can't she.

SSI is means tested, and I was of the understanding LPR's were not entitled to anything means tested.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Not quite, but she has just arrived.
