hi, my name is Jose. I am in the process of petitioning for a k1 visa. My wife to be is currently in Mexico and I really need to fully understand the petitioning process in order to continue. On the petition for the visa, it asks for her passport number but unfortunately she currently does not have one. Can someone please explain to me what I must fill out and in what order? Will I have a problem if I leave her passport number blank? Or should she get her passport first? thank you in advance for your answers.

That's a no brainer, tell her to get a passport, she must have one

You would need a passport to apply for K1 visa.

Maybe I'm just not following the OP's question here, but as far as I know the beneficiary's passport is only optional, not required, when you file the I-129F to start the K-1 petition... the beneficiary only needs the passport at the K-1 interview... have I got this right or did I not understand the OP's question?

Actually if you read the application, there is no place to put her passport number IF she is not IN the US. Item #15 is to be completed only if the alien fiancé(e) is currently in the US. So I would complete the form, send it in and have her apply for her passport while the petition is waiting to be adjudicated.

Good luck,

Dave

on the form, the part that says "information about your alien fiance" the section that starts with #15, it states, if your fiance is currently in the United States, complete the following, that is where they ask for the passport number but she is in mexico so you are safe to file, no number needed, but she will have to have a passport for the interview. my hubs, then fiance, had an expired passport and he didn't renew it until about 2 weeks before his interview.

If she is not currently in the US, then you leave those questions blank. It is not required for her to have a passport in order for you to file the I-129F petition. See the example form > http://www.visajourney.com/examples/Form-I-129F.pdf

Also, see the guide here on VJ for what to fill out and what is required with I-129F > http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide

She will absolutely need the passport before she applies for the K-1 visa after your petition is approved. So, she should get a passport as soon as she can.
