Isn't "engagement" just a mutual promise to marry each other? No official government filing is needed for that. It's just an agreement between a couple. And there is no standard requirements to declare "engagement" status. Ring is nice gesture but no law or custom requires it. She can just buy a fake diamond ring and call it a engagement ring if she really wants to wear one, but at this point I wouldn't about it.

Our Visa is approved and she is getting everything ready on her end now for the interview. So she called up and tells me that she now needs an engagment ring to wear for the interview, When I went there I really did not plan ahead and bring one and now I am very sceptical to send this in the mail.

My question is was everybody engaged when they went to the consulate for the interview?

Thanks for your feedback

Don't need an engagement ring, don't even need a receipt for an engagement ring. Wait until she arrives for the ring. You two are already engaged.... the K-1 is a Fiancee visa ;) ... just no ring

Just do the Letter of Intent to marry same as the ones you did for the petition process (not that they will ask for them at the embassy), have a few pages of your chat log and such or any other method you two communicate with each other.

Not everyone can afford or wants an engagement ring, so it doesn't seem like something they would require. Rings are expensive & we're all paying visa fees & moving costs along with it. Don't worry at all not having one. smile.png

Engagement is not a requirement but signed statements that you both intend to marry are.

I guess is you swear that you intend to marry and in itself is declaration of engagement to marry.

Rings are not required.

Actually, for our interview in Moscow, the consulate did not even ask for the letters of intent. Maybe sometimes they want them, but not always appearently. Still a good idea to have them though.

Our Visa is approved and she is getting everything ready on her end now for the interview. So she called up and tells me that she now needs an engagment ring to wear for the interview, When I went there I really did not plan ahead and bring one and now I am very sceptical to send this in the mail.

The K-1 is a fiance visa. How are you even in the process without being fiances? Its my understanding that when you propose to someone, you become engaged which makes you fiances....

At least send her a ring in the mail.

To me "YOU" really dropped the ball here, how could you ask a lady to marry you without getting down on one knee and asking the question, did you ask her her Skype, just funnin'.,,. but it could cause her a probblem,., it could certainally lead to more questions for her! What was you thinkin?

Getting married, engaged, and you have not given her a ring? You will have alot to make up for, when you see her, as, just to me it is embarassing for her I am sure, but just make it "right" with her, YOU owe her bigtime,.,.., hahhahhah Good Luck!

Life is not a fairytale...the embassy knows this. Loads of people discuss their intention to get married without a frilly, fussy, formal proposal.

As for a ring...if you have the money, why not? Otherwise, the cost of an engagement ring could make a decent contribution to downpayment on a starter home instead.

Don't send a ring through the mail. It could get lost. You could get charged taxes on it (I recall an older post where someone was billed several hundreds in taxes by one of the well-known courier companies for their ring). It is not needed for the interview.

Flying to Seattle on 6 May 2014!

Being engaged is a requirement for the I-129F petition and K-1 visa interview. That is the entire premise behind the K-1. They are for already engaged couples to have the foreign fiance(e) travel to the US to marry and immigrate.

If you are asking if an engagement ring is required, then no.

Yes this is it my mistake, the question should be if a ring is required. Sorry about this

I dont get it!! When u are engaged with someone u are committed to each other and have a same life. A ring doesnt mean anything but the reason u get a k1 visa is cause u are engaged with someone and u are about to marry! U need evidence to show that u two are a real couple.

Me and my fiance we have the receipt for the wedding bands we wear. My diamond ring is from his mother. We put the copy of the receipt inside the package! And receipt from my wedding dress too.

If ur visa process goes to the interview what kind of evidence will u have to show? Pictures? Receipt from wedding bands and wedding dress? Statements from the bank that u send to ur fiance money? Conversations from skype only i dont think are enough!

It sounds like the reason you don't have an engagement ring is because you possibly weren't planning to propose when you went to visit her that time. As others have already said, this is not an issue as long as she's honest about it at the interview. If they ask about a ring, she just needs to tell them that you had not planned to propose when you did so you didn't have a ring to give her and you didn't want to send one through the mail. It's as simple as that. The ring is not what shows if the two of you are committed to each. The embassy will look more at your other evidence than whether she has a ring on her finger or not.

If you have these things it's great, but honestly we didn't have any receipts from rings or wedding dress since we don't wear rings and my mom, who is a seamstress, sewed my wedding dress. You can have plenty of other evidence without having these things.
