I need some advise what to do. I am now 6 months pregnant and I am not in my husbands insurance yet since I dont have SSN. I filed my permanent residency last March 2010 but until now I dont have the green card yet. I will be due in October 30. The payment plan for doctors appointment and delivery is so expensive. What shall I do when its time for my delivery?

1. A K-1 is eligible for a SSN. You could have applied for one the day you arrived.

3. You could have applied for an EAD with your AOS, which would be approved now, and you could get a SSN with the EAD.

2. You do not need a SSN to get on insurance.

So some way, a lot of opportunities were missed.

I expect it's too late now, because you are due so soon. Even if you get on the insurance now, they might not cover the birth. You should check with the insurance, however, to be sure.

Regarding cheap birth plans, you might look into a home birth.

Having a green card doesn't help you with paying for health care. Without coverage you and your husband should talk with the doctors and hospital about payment arrangements.

@Peter Pan. We went to womens clinic and set me up for payment plan, but they change it and made it higher when we question some bills that we need to pay so high. I only had 3 visits from the doctor.

Have you tried to contact USCIS and put in a service request/ask what's going on? Have you had your biometrics appointment? 1½ year seems like too long to not hear anthing, or not to do anything.

Being pregnant may be seen as a pre-existing condition by the insurance company. Your husband needs to read the policy.

To find a midwife for a home birth try http://www.gabirthnetwork.com/

Sorry to keep going on about it but even if you filed AOS in March 2011 that is a year and 5 months, it should not take this long, you need to chase that up.

But a K-1 holder is eligible to get a SSN once he/she got here in the US. I got mine after 3 days from the time of application. I waited 3 weeks before I applied so that SSN office could track my status in the immigration data base. When The civil surgeon requires me to complete my shots, my husband added me that same day in his health insurance so that I could get my shots in his healthcare provider. This way, we avoided to spend another cash for the shots. After I've been added to his health insurance, I was able to get all the medical check up, shots and lab tests that I need. I had all the privilege for my medical needs after that addition. So, I don't think you're not eligible to get such as delivery in your husband's insurance once you're added. Get your SSN now and be added right away.

As for the green card, I can't comment just yet cuz I myself has the biometric coming next week yet.

I agree with other posters.

You could have got a SSN when you arrived.

You shouldn't need one to get on your husbands insurance. Have you called them to explain the situation?

AOS shouldn't take this long. Call and see what's going on.

You will be having a baby soon and you really need to start getting this organized!!

Best of luck!

You are correct that a K-1 visaholder can apply for a SSN. However, the window to do so is about two after arrival to two weeks before the I-94 expires. After the I-94 expires you have to have the EAD or GC in order to apply for a SSN because the SSA requires you to be a LPR or some other classification they recognize (i.e. K-1 visa holder) and when the I-94 expires you are no longer in any valid classification, but out-of-status unitl you file for the GC, but the SSA does not recognize anything but the EAD or GC as a valid document to prove lawful presence in the US. So by not filing for the SSC the OP must wait for the GC.

This is one of the reasons we here on VJ say get the SSC ASAP upon arrival as there are other reasons to having a SSN that go beyond immigration and working.

My employer has a way around the SSN for insurance as I asked them what happens if we do not get one because the SSA does not know a K-1 is allowed to receive a SSN. Fortunately, we had not problems in getting a SSN for my wife. She had hers about 30 days after arriving.

Good luck,

Dave

Thank you all for the advice. I was so messed up, my mind was and confused. Again I posted a wrong year its 2012 not 2011, I wonder where my mind go. Any ways, THANK YOU for the advices. I already have Employment Authorization Card, and base on what I read that I can use it as a proof that I am eligible to get SSN since my I-94 already expired last March. I had my biometrics done, just waiting for the GC. Tomorrow I will call SSA office to be sure.

have you called into USCIS Hotline, gotten an ISO, and asked for casefile status?

Do that, now.

Then, once you get an ISO on the telephone, ask if any returned mail pieces on you, and give over the current mailing address to the ISO and ask for all returned mail pieces to be sent on to you at the current mailing address..

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
