Sooo I just moved to US a week ago and I am bored! No friend & no job. I have SS#, but am still looking for a car. I know friends and jobs won't always come easy and I am expecting to have some very boring months before things start to roll.

In this situation....I have a question for you. What did you guys do when you first came to the US? When you don't have a car or a job? I mean I cannot look for a car online for 24 hours. Plus I can only go look at them when my husband is around (weekend only).

My plan so far is wake up early and just work out like a crazy person at home and around the house. The nearest gym is not in a walkable distance.

My wife currently takes ESL classes, and have met a few close friends there. She also has a bus pass to get around since she does not drive. She likes to walk the dog, and going to the library. We go to the gym together during the evening after I get off work. What about joining social sites like meetup.com?

yes, I did join some volunteer groups on meetup.com. I will start attending their events once I got a car! Unfortunately, we have no bus system in LA. Not the one that's safe anyway...

Get an exercises program to do at home.

I have done "p90x" twice. Started "insanity". Got my wife a program from there also. Keep fit at home. Also the forums there have like minded exercise people so you can get support and ideas from them

Walk around your neighbourhood to get to know it, any amenities within walking distance, and say hello to your neighbours.

Once you know the neighbours, ask if they can (occasionally) take you places, such as shopping.

Cook

See if there are any volunteering opportunities within walking or public transport distance- it's how I made my own friends.

Sign up for some free FEMA courses online. After passing them, you can convert them into college credits from Frederick University in Maryland.

I have a 4 year degree in Accounting and I needed an extra 30 college credits to make a total of 150 credits. I got the final 30 from the FEMA courses.

You may not be able to submit the tests online because you need a social security number but you can store the answers in an Excel file and when you get a SSN you can submit.

The nice thing about it is you can do each course offline when you download the information. Then you submit your answers online when you already had answered the questions off line.

My grandmother in law has one. It sheds like crazy, it's teeth are awful, the snorting and nasal issues... no. Cute but not a pet for me... at all :S

We've always wanted to get a puppy as soon as we settle down.

Don't let the cuteness fool you. Having a puppy ( 6-8 weeks old) takes a LOT of work and attention. So the timing is perfect that I can stay home looking for job and taking care of the pup for 2-3 months while waiting for EAD/GC

Right after my wife moved here from Tokyo, we moved to an apartment complex that has a high number of international tenants. One of the local colleges offers an ESL class right in one of the apartment buildings! So she had a chance to make many international friends.

Unfortunately I'm not comfortable with her taking the bus in LA. So getting a car really opens up a lot of doors, so to speak.
