My husband leaves it up, I leave it down. Both of us are capable of putting it where we want it

It stays down. As we both use it down and only one of us uses it up, the likelihood of how it will be used next is down more often than up. Besides, with the lid cover on top of the lid, it generally crashes down all on its own even before it is ready to be put back down.

Aha, K. -- so YOU'RE one of those infernal sorts. Back in the dark days of singletude, when I visited some girl's house and the lid wouldn't stay up on its own because of a cover, that was my last visit, pee man.

Knowing what I know today: If I had it to do over again, I'd simply rip the cover off the lid, place the cover lovingly in the toilet, leave the seat up after I'd done my business, and not say a word about it, no man. Or, better yet, I'd simply continue to do my business of manly elimination while the lid & seat came crashing down, and remain oblivious to (and silent about) the result, which would have been HER fault, anyway, for having a lid-cover in the first place.

And, if the seats stay down most of the time, doesn't that interfere with the cats when they want a drink, huh man?

LOL! The lid stays up, it is the seat that is down so if the cats wished to they could still drink from the toilet (without either of us worrying about the seat crashing down on them while doing so!). Our cats, however, are smarter than that. They've figured out that the fresh water comes from taps and are able to nudge the tap enough with their heads to get it dripping then scrunch down into the sink to lick up the water as it drips. I wish they would be just as knowledgeable about turning the taps back off when they are finished, though .

Ditto to this. Also we have dogs and the idea of them drinking out of the toilet grosses me out. It's actually my husband who INSISTS the seat and lid be put down. If he didn't I wouldn't care whether the seat was left up or down. I never understood why women insist on men putting it down when men have to lift it after women... If they have to lift it, we can put it down.

I am guessing you have never accidentally sat down on a on a toilet when the seat as been left up...lol
