I am guessing you have never accidentally sat down on a on a toilet when the seat as been left up...lol

I have actually when I was a child, but not as an adult. Just as I check a regular chair before sitting down, I of course look at a toilet before sitting down :P

The lid is put down before flushing so as to minimize the spraying of bacteria into the room.

Absolutely. That is why I keep it down before flushing

In our place, it's always down unless it's currently in use. One of our cats can't see, and it's not a nice surprise for him to fall in the toilet if the lid is up, so it's down and that's it. Even if we have guests, I'll let them know why it'll be down.

My husband leaves it up, I leave it down. Both of us are capable of putting it where we want it :innocent:

Well said!!

I have wondered for a long time if this was a uniquely American issue. We never argued about such things when I was young. It just is what it is. It was strange to me that shortly after we got married my husband thanked me for not making an issue out of the position of the toilet seat. This is a strange and bewildering land....

It stays down. As we both use it down and only one of us uses it up, the likelihood of how it will be used next is down more often than up. Besides, with the lid cover on top of the lid, it generally crashes down all on its own even before it is ready to be put back down.

I knew somebody who sat down to pee, rather than upset his girlfriend. I stole her away from him and sent her back after a few weeks, and soaking a few of those fluffy covers she put on the lid...turns out they muffle the sound when you make a late night trip to the reading room.
