And what kind of class? Universities and colleges tend to require some sort of residency requirement, but if it's just like a cooking class, then there should be no problem.

Sure you can take a class. You are in the US with the Government's permission and you can do whatever any other resident can do with two exceptions:

1) You can't work legally and

2) You can't register as a matriculated student at a college or university.

Edited by Just Bob

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

President Teddy Roosevelt on Columbus Day 1915

Hey SaraDee -

if it's an 'extension course' an a big uni

or

anything at a community college -

you shouldn't have any issue.

BUT - these things vary - you should go in to the registrar's office of each 'place' around you, inquire in person. It'll get you out of the house, and you can have some fun with the Canadian Students Organization, as well.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I'm going from a B2 visa to Green Card through marriage. I remember reading somewhere that visitors have no right to take classes in the United States. Not sure if that means taking a program at a proper University or any class. I'm thinking of taking voice-over and film editing classes. No real program or anything.

I would have liked to enroll for a Masters after applying for AOS (at the moment, I am still waiting for my I-129f noa2)... I won't be able to do that? Do I have to wait till I have the GC in my hand?

My wife had no trouble taking her classes while AOS. She's a full time PhD student now and doesn't have GC yet. They just were concerned about her I-94, but she showed them the NOA and it wasn't a problem. Same with DMV

Just my $0.02 and I think it depends on the school/state/etc...

I've looked into classes (specifically English language classes) for my finacée at the local community college because I figured she'd have some time on her hands after she arrives here. Not only do I think there should be no problem with her registering but once we're married, she automatically meets the residency requirements for tuition purposes based on my living here.

I don't think there's anything immigration-wise that should stop you, maybe only school specific requirements.

I agree with Leigh Ann - I think it will depend on what school/state. Generally, I do not imagine it being a problem... some schools can be very picky about it though. Are you thinking of taking the class at a college? vocational school? private school? That will play a factor as well.. they may have their own policy on it..

in California they don't care that you married and have a green card. For year you pay out of sate tuition. So it varies state to state.

agreed my husband was taking classes here in california and the only thing he was asked to provide was proof of residence, nothing about a green card or status for that matter. i was wondering though why just bob indicated should/could not be a matriculating student. my husband is/was prior to gc?
