Does USCIS screen social media the way potential employers do? Has anyone had an issue due to their social media sites?

I don;t think they do it in every case, but yes, we have had cases on here where beneficiaries were asked about stuff they posted (or didn;t post- such as "single" on FB) on social media.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

I can see where a wrong relationship status could cause problems. What about character? If they see photos of parties/alcohol/drug paraphernalia and things like that can they possibly deny?

Yeah it is a way to figure out stuffs...

every case has it owns particularities! If they think they need to do more research on your case, they will use every tool available to do so. And yes, it can be used against you.

We've read reports from folks' experiences at the IV Unit (not USCIS) where the Vice-Consul went over some things in FB, also asked for username/password, on interview day, when there seemed to be some problem.

But that's the IV Unit, not USCIS.

Your question is about USCIS. A FBI Name check is done during USCIS processing, does that include any FB checking stuff? unknown.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

They are absolutely not "hacking" Facebook, and they don't have a backdoor to it.

Anybody concerned about USCIS seeing what they have on FB should be concerned about FB in general. You should never, ever, ever, ever post anything on the internet under your own name that you wouldn't feel comfortable with anybody in your life seeing it. The stuff should all be legal and benign.

Even under a pseudonym it can be traced back to you depending on what it is and where you post it.

Facebook legally owns all the pics you've put up there anyway and they never delete everything. I got rid of my account years ago.

I haven't a problem with them looking. If anything they'd see us complaining about how ridiculously slow everything is being and demanding they hurry up and get a move on. If they do really look, which I doubt, perhaps I should leave some choice words.. :devil::rofl:

More and more...social media and internet searches are being performed

to gather background info about a person. It's not just employers anymore...

even renters, schools, dating sites...more and more are doing it now.

It's just not advisable to leave stupid remarks on social media or internet blogs.

Agree that it is not advisable to have anything on your FB that you wouldn't be happy with your partner, employer, family or yes even USCIS seeing. Every day some idiot gets fired or in trouble with the law because they didn't think before posting.There is a chance that the IV unit will view your account as I definitely have seen people post about experiencing that on here, maybe not USCIS but who knows....

Our facebook is a joint account, and we have nothing bad up there. I was only posting the question as a discussion of interest, to see if anyone actually had any issues stemming from social medias.

What is this IV unit that you speak of?

The IV(Immigration Visa) Unit is the Embassy the CO's (Consular Officer) at the embassy their Unit.

One of the issues I have seen people mention alot that CO's have mentioned is K1's using the wife/husband lingo's on their FB either as relationship status or just calling each other that. And yes it was a issue and yes it got them denied because the embassy said they felt they were married.
