• But then again they have no incentive to work

My personal opinion is that it's a waste of time and money. You can do it all by yourself reading through the instructions on the form and checking the VJ forum if you get stuck. Only thing an attorney does is filling out the form which you will have to double check anyway. And the attorneys seems to mess it up half the time anyway so you're probably going to do a way better job than them as you will most likely double check and research everything while they will just assume they're doing it right.

I would say no if it is a pretty simple and straight forward case. Also depends on where you are from because as much as it sucks, DHS will like discriminate to some extent based on the country. If you have a good grasp of the English language and patience, then the forms aren't too bad to work through, and there's tons and tons and tons of people here to help you along the way.

The biggest thing to realize is that everyone's case is different. Most of the time if you have trouble, it's because you forgot this or that document or proof / evidence. That's probably the biggest thing. Personally my wife Danielle waited in line at the consulate with a lady going for the same visa (K-1) and she had a lawyer, and the lawyer was screwing up big time.

No! No!! NO!!! We got our RFE because our attorney didn't even think about Letter of Intent and didn't fill my biographic form. And even after we got our RFE letter he kept saying that letter of intetnt is not necessary

From personal experience and as others have said, if your case is straight forward a lawyer is entirely unnecessary. This website provided me with all of the information to accurately fill out and put together everything I needed (without an RFE may I add). The guides and forums are your best friend! Plus, someone correct me if I am wrong, I believe all petitions are still being forwarded to CSC so your friend likely won't have a long wait.

We got an attorney. I choose this due to my fiance having kids and the usa having unstable relations with his country which might cause the embassy there to shut down. I wanted to make sure we got everything right the first time and had someone who would be able to help us if things started to get complicated. We specifically hired a law firm that only deals with immigration so I feel comfortable with their experience.

So I guess for me it was for piece of mind. As of right now it hasn't been necessary but we have just begun the process.

If your friend chooses to get a lawyer please do your homework. They are not all good. Some are terrible, and can and will make your situation worse.
