  1. German Democracy: AfD Wins Regional Election, Will NOT Be 'Allowed' to Form Government UPDATE [...] Scholz and his buddies have been tightening the screws on opposition voices for years without having the first clue what the actual effects are. Democracy - pffft. Hardly. They're the first to squawk about "Nazis" and extremists - I can only assume that, like vampires, none of them own mirrors. 2. I've always wondered: Why do we call it Labor Day if nobody labors on this day? --- How did we spend our day/weekend? I waited around ALL day for the landscapers to show up. They're finally here. I plan also to visit my favorite large thrift shop for half-price day.
  3. This seems a quite excellent description of where, how, and whether "the buck stops." Comments? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trump Vs. The Interagency [...] "Time and again, the question I am hearing from members of the general public, and which I put to you here, Admiral, is: Who is running the country?" That is actually the key question in deciding for whom to vote this fall in the presidential race. For voting to matter, we have to have some sense that the people for whom we vote to make decisions are the people who make the decisions. If they aren't, our vote really doesn't matter. Harry Truman's famous sign gracing the desk in the Oval Office said, "The buck stops here." Whether voters agree with all of Donald Trump's policies or not, the evidence points to the conclusion that voting for him alone results in a visible place where the buck will stop. 4. Thoughtful points by VDH. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can They Really Reinvent Kamala Harris in 70 Days? In theory, it should be hard for Kamala Harris to win the presidency of the United States. Under pressure, Harris just completed her first "live interview"—a disastrous performance that was mysteriously taped, edited, and emotionally supported by her co-interviewed running mate. During the interview, she claimed that her values remain the same even though her manifestations of them have admittedly changed. Translated, that means for the next 70 days, she will advocate for popular policies antithetical to her own values, which will inevitably resurface after the election once the current façade fades away. 5. Free speech is dying in Britain My American friends are surprised to learn there's no equivalent to the First Amendment in Britain. They have forgotten a free press was one of the things their ancestors rebelled to establish in the US. Free speech is a much more recent thing in the UK. If it was born in the 1960s, it seems to be dying in the 2020s. After the recent riots, people were given prison sentences for posting words and images on social media. In some cases, the illegal incitement to violence was obvious. [...] https://archive.is/PDe3b#selection-721.83-721.145
  6. If we successfully identify as members of the group that qualifies for reparations, wouldn't voting for her be worth it?
  7. He feels trapped, like a cornered animal perhaps being slowly neutered, and he perceives that you're not acting. You've said it, in your own words. He perceives this. How exactly do you expect him to respond? Again, stated in your own words. When a situation is unacceptable, we have two choices: change the situation, or get out of it. Your posts are laden with "I can't" and "I don't," which adds up to "I won't." Quit making excuses! Where there's a will, there's a way. You need to take all these bulls by the horns and act, with determination and resolve. Show some resolve and some fire! You must look him in the eye (grab him by the shirt front if necessary) and tell him that you're frustrated, too, and you intend to make positive changes starting now, and you expect his contributory input or at least cooperation. Tell him that progress will be stepwise, because Rome wasn't built in a day. And when you tell him all this, you mean it, and you act on it. Tell your parents what you intend, and get their help. Get on the phone with your Congressman's immigration liaison and concisely explain the need to expedite EAD. Get on the phone with real estate agents who specialize in rentals, and find out about decent houses in shopping-convenient neighborhoods where you can split rent with other couples. Get on NextDoor or similar neighbor programs and ask who has a garage apartment with kitchen access. Call church and synagogue offices to learn of resources. Network with your parents' friends and your neighbors. Muster your resourcefulness and apply it. Edited to add: And keep him apprised of every action and every step! It's your choice -- correct a set of correctable problems, or throw away months/years of effort and thousands of dollars to get him here.
  8. This needs to be front-page news, but of course it ain't. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Independent Candidate Reveals Harris Campaign Bribed Him to Drop Out of Race Independent far-left presidential candidate Cornel West revealed a shocking admission about how far the Democratic Party will go to win the 2024 election. During an interview on the Status Coup News podcast, West claimed that the Harris campaign offered him a deal that resulted in him dropping out of the race. He said they bribed him by offering him a cushy job in Harris' administration should she be elected and a promise to pay off his campaign debts. 9. Incentives Matter: Britain Is Raising Taxes, and the Productive Are Fleeing One unshakable law of economics is this: What you reward, you get more of, and what you tax, you get less of. The government of the formerly Great Britain doesn't seem to understand this fundamental law. They are proposing to hike taxes and fees, and high-income and wealthy (which are not always the same thing) Brits are looking to the exits. We can hardly blame them. 10. Our Asian cousin once again proves simian superiority. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meanwhile, Orangutan Bolts Zoo Enclosure by Swinging in 'Cartwheel-Like Motion' in Ingenious Escape [...] I ran across this story about an ingenious orangutan that cartwheeled, tight-rope-walked, and put on a short trapeze show to escape from its enclosure at the Toronto Zoo on Thursday. Kembali — one of the zoo's seven Sumatran orangutans — was caught outside of the zoo's new outdoor orangutan exhibit, leaving staff scratching their heads over how he escaped the otherwise secure perimeter. 11. Good News: The People Responsible for the Afghanistan Debacle Will Now Help Guard Candidates The Secret Service, with its abject incompetence (at best) thoroughly exposed in the wake of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, is now going to get some help. The Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, has announced that his department will be providing those charged with guarding the presidential and vice presidential candidates with "additional military support capabilities." Hey, that’s a relief. We can all rest easy knowing that the people responsible for the Biden regime's catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan in Aug. 2021 will now be making sure that some young ideologue doesn't try again to make the left's Trump problem go away for good. What could possibly go wrong? [...] https://pjmedia.com/robert-spencer/2024/08/31/good-news-the-people-responsible-for-the-afghanistan-debacle-will-now-help-guard-candidates-n4932153
  12. Keffiyeh-Clad Man Injures Jewish Students with Glass Bottle at University of Pittsburgh [...] The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Saturday that a man named Jarrett Buba, who at 52 years old is unlikely to be a student at the university, "attacked two Jewish University of Pittsburgh students with a glass bottle as they walked through campus Friday evening near the Cathedral of Learning." Buba "had been sitting at a table across Forbes Avenue from where the students were walking when he ran across the street and attacked them about 6 p.m." The attack was as bloody as it was gratuitous: "One of the students had cuts on his face and the other was bleeding from cuts on his neck." This was no random incident; the headgear that each party was wearing indicates what was really going on. Buba's victims were wearing yarmulkes; Buba himself, however, was sporting a keffiyeh, the checkered scarf that is closely associated with the Palestinian Arab jihad against Israel. The simple fact that he was wearing this scarf indicated that he was fanatically committed to the Palestinian cause, even to the point of thinking himself righteous when attacking random Jewish students. 13. A Requiem for Hersh Goldberg-Polin [...] When Goldberg-Polin was taken hostage, one of his hands was blown off by a Hamas grenade during the attack on the Nova music festival. In April of 2024, the terrorists holding the 23-year-old released a proof-of-life video of their wretched captive. And over the weekend, the young man was murdered on the cusp of being rescued. I repeat: Hersh Goldberg-Polin was a U.S. citizen. I don't recognize an America that does not come down like a ton of bricks on the crappy terrorist group that did this to one of our own. Instead, the body count under this administration just keeps piling up. [...] https://pjmedia.com/athena-thorne/2024/09/01/a-requiem-for-hersh-goldberg-polin-n4932159
  14. Thanks to Bidementia & Kommie... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NYC Migrant Shelter Turns Into Teen Fight Club Back in January, the former Wyndham Garden Hotel in Queens, New York was sold to Long Island-based Bayrock Capital for $24 million. But the new owners were not planning to offer lush accommodations to tourists visiting the Big Apple. They immediately took out a contract with the Department of Homeless Services and began converting the resort into housing for illegal migrants. The results have not painted a picture of success in a city already overrun by illegals. Neighbors have filed countless complaints with the police and the Department of Homeland Security. Every night, the sidewalk in front of the shelter is overrun with minors ranging in age from only six or seven up through their later teens. Neighbors say that the children have turned the area into their own "teen fight club," with screaming and shrieking piercing the night and making it impossible for many legal residents to sleep. Multiple injuries have been reported and the security guards who are supposed to oversee the site frequently do nothing about it. Many of the neighbors are fed up and they want the shelter to be closed, but the city is thus far ignoring their calls for help. 15. Among many other good points, the author observes that Kommie is yet another whom Those Really Running Things can control. Good reading. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Committee's Candidate: Harris's Inconsistent Campaign So on Thursday, Kamala Harris was finally allowed out to meet the press. Well, she was allowed to sit for about 18 minutes for a carefully scripted interview on a Dem-friendly network—CNN—with a partisan media head—Dana Bash—who came with a satchel of softballs. Apparently, Harris has yet to be certified for solo flight, however, since she was chaperoned by her pick for VP, Minnesota governor and serial fantasist Tim Walz. How did it go? [...] Democrats' plans for mass amnesty mean that every illegal alien who has entered the country under the Biden-Harris administration could become eligible for Social Security and Medicare. [...] [...] the prospect of illegal aliens bankrupting Social Security and Medicare could become a serious political dilemma for Democrats. Americans will undoubtedly not take kindly to liberal politicians flooding the country with illegal aliens they can give amnesty to in order to boost Democrat Party voter rolls and increase dependency on the federal government by adding huge new numbers to entitlement programs. 17. Anti-democracy Democrats are playing ballot games to boost Harris' chances Hmm: Democrats are fighting to get third-party candidates Jill Stein and Cornel West off the ballot in multiple states — while simultaneously battling to keep RFK Jr. on some states' ballot even after he's withdrawn. "Defending democracy" sure is a tricky business. Of course, the "principle" at stake here is nothing but "what's best for Kamala Harris." (1) It is Sunday, (2) we need good news and approvals, and (3) toward that end, here's our Official Weekly VAWA-Thread Joke*: *guaranteed to bring good news and approvals, if correlation = causation ============================================== THE TEST AT THE PEARLY GATES A woman found herself standing at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter greeted her and said, "These are the Gates to Heaven, my dear. But you must do one more thing before you can enter." The woman was very excited, and asked St. Peter what she must do. "Spell a word," St. Peter replied. "What word?" she asked. "Any word," answered St. Peter. "It's your choice." The woman promptly replied, "Then the word I will spell is love. L-O-V-E." St. Peter welcomed her in, and asked her if she would mind taking his place at the Pearly Gates for a few minutes while he took a break. The woman was left sitting in St. Peter's chair when a man approached, and she realized that it was her husband. "What happened?" she cried. "Why are you here?" Her husband stared at her for a moment, then said, "I was so upset when I left your funeral that I got in an accident. Did I really make it to Heaven?" "Not yet," she replied. "You must spell a word first." "What word?" he asked. "Czechoslovakia."

Good introduction to MaineCoons: https://www.thesprucepets.com/maine-#######-cat-breed-profile-characteristics-and-care-5221962 (Knew that would happen -- replace the ####s with c o o n [remove spaces]. Actually, the link still appears to work when clicked.) I disagree with the recommendation to brush them "once weekly." They're longhairs, so you might have to brush yours at least once daily. And remember that cats are obligate carnivores and do distinctly better on wet diets than on dry kibble. I use chewy.com (best website ever) for ordering what mine likes to eat.
