    https://www.theroot.com/8-of-the-10-worst-coronavirus-hot-spots-are-in-the-sout-1842648491
Finally eschewing the sentiments of noted not-scientist Donald Trump, Ph.D. (), some red-state governors are beginning to take the research-informed advice of health experts and issued stay-at-home orders in Southern states already ravaged by the coronavirus. Other governors and legislators, however, are sticking by their dear leader’s advice and are still holding out, despite research showing that the deadly virus is actually worse in their respective states.
When the University of Chicago’s Center for Spatial Data Science COVID Analytics Team used population-adjusted data to map coronavirus outbreaks by county, eight of the top 10 “hot spots” were in Southern states. Using the total number of confirmed cases and then adjusted for population, the team noted the difference between clusters (counties with a high number of cases surrounded by other counties with similar outbreaks) and outliers (areas with a high number of cases but are surrounded by counties that don’t have significant outbreaks).

Well I'm fairly heavy on criticism on the UK and other countries that did not prepare or seemingly never prepared. I guess I just never thought or expected that I would see this country so very not prepared for something like this. What made me more annoyed yesterday was when Kushner basically got up there and said "oh our stuff isn't for you guys.. it's for us". Us? And whom might us be, buddy? Maybe he misspoke or maybe he's a complete idiot, but if I were the POTUS i'd have dragged that kid out the door by his ear so fast and told him to never speak ever again. How many should have been in reserve? I don't know, but it needed to be, both collectively for every state and federally more than we have. It's further upsetting that the stuff we've been sending to the states is inferior, moldy, or broken. Who looks after this stuff? While other countries have handled this far better - they handled it better because they excelled in clear areas we failed. Testing, supplies, and health care preparedness. Singapore is actually getting worse and shutting things down now. Taiwan still seems to have a great handle on things.

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that, whereas wearing masks doesn't hurt, doing so doesn't protect you from catching the virus as much as it protects other people from catching it from you.

That's cool under normal circumstances, but that's not how you fight a pandemic. You'd want everyone tested and preferably eventually immunized, so they don't pass it on to those that can't get a shot.

There's an estimated 10-12 million undocumented immigrants in the US, that's a lot of people who can still pass on the virus if they don't also get tested and vaccinated.

We have difficult soil here, so I mainly focus on gardening hardy you-animals-better-not-touch-me perennials. The lack of winter has been a disaster though. We've considered building box beds on wheels for container variety veggies as my husband always had good success back home... but of course UK climate is not like here, where it's stinkin' hot in the summer and full of bugs, voles, and mischievous squirrels. I don't like growing veg from seeds, never had a lot of luck, probably just buy starter plants from the Amish neighbors. Sometimes you just get bad seeds.

    2. step up testing
    3. Stop making states compete for equipment on the open market, consolidate and coordinate the procurement
    4. Data driven decisions on treatment and vaccine. Political operatives should stay out.

I'm pretty sure the WHO collects aggregate data and verifies with their own teams. It's worth reading the WHO's joint report on China. It's a PDF download. Outlines what they did, when they were on the ground in China and what the knowledge gaps are.

There's some interesting information in there that I haven't really come across anywhere else. I can see why the WHO was a step ahead of the CDC on this.

Right now globally it's around 6 days. Which isn't bad considering 3 weeks ago it was 3 days.

The US isn't far behind actually, right around 5 days right now.

Oh I agree with you that there is a disease element to suicide.  I have lost members of my own family to suicide including my younger brother.  And he seemed totally fine right up until the moment he wasn't.  And we have to take care of our mental health.  I found myself getting anxious and depressed today - which I take medication for - and I decided to come to this forum and hang out a bit.

But I still stand by my statement that suicide is a choice.  Maybe at that time they felt like they had no choice which is sad.  But in the end they make the choice to end their lives.

Full lockdown for MD now. 1yr in jail and $5000 fine. We've had too many idiots having massive parties and goofing off. Most of a lockdown for DE. Workers coming in from the border towns need to be essential only. Our numbers continue to increase somewhat alarmingly. Starting to test slightly better with drive thru clinics, but still only reserving for those most sick. Both states have outbreaks in elderly facilities and in a high risk psychiatric facility. Some hospitals are putting out calls for donations. I'm trying to get in touch with the nursing colleges to see if they can assist. They shut the state parks so not hiking for me. I may start bouncing off the walls soon. UK still rising at alarming rate. They admitted they are not counting those they left to die at home or in nursing facilities. Shout out to doctors and pharmacists that are giving up their salaries so that their medical staff can continue working.

90DayFinancier got a reaction from abum in New study identifies a psychological factor linked to Trump supporters’ vindictiveness
The desire to matter and feel significant among Donald Trump supporters is associated with support for hostile and vindictive actions against the president’s political rivals, according to new research published in the journal Political Psychology. In a series of studies conducted immediately before and after the 2016 election in the United States, the researchers examined how the quest for personal significance was related to confrontational intergroup behaviors.
“Our team studies what motivates people to support and engage in radical political actions. In the past we focused on actions — both peaceful and violent — that were aimed against the political system such as protesting, donating money for a cause, or using politically motivated violence,” explained study author Katarzyna Jaśko, an associate professor at Jagiellonian University in Poland.
“In this study we wanted to look at both sides and to explore the motivations of not only those who protest against the government but also those who support it. Our thinking was that just like some citizens contest the system and engage in aggressive actions directed against it, the government can use its power in benevolent or hostile ways and it’s important to understand whether its supporters accept it, and if so why?
