You don’t need to take a copy of originals if you are bringing the originals. I uploaded online tax transcripts. So I brought paper copies of those (and wasn’t asked for them). Actually I was only asked for my green caed and passports.
  2. Thanks

That's odd. Maybe they're in the process and scanning and uploading. Check it again in a few days and see if more things are added?

Actually, we just had our passport interviews today, and found that we could submit applications for our under-18 kids using our certificates. All applications were submitted together, and the original citizenship evidence applies to the kids as well as the adults. Also, if you request both a passport book and a passport card for the kids, the card serves as evidence of citizenship even when expired. So for the cost of the card ($15 or $30 depending on the age of the child) you get a permanent evidence of citizenship that is as effective as an N-600 which costs over $1000. Nice to know, and very helpful passport officer at the USPS.

What I’m trying to explain is that personally, I could not bring myself to say the oath until recently. To me saying an oath is something you should do only if you have no reservations. Perhaps I’m too purist about this, but it’s an extremely serious matter and no one should take it lightly. It’s not about giving up citizenship in my case, it’s about giving up loyalty which is perhaps more nebulous but  no less important  in my mind. Until I was able mentally to give up loyalty to my original country i was not prepared to say the oath. And if that meant 37 years of being a resident alien and not being able to vote or serve on a jury, then that was the price I was prepared to pay.

As I said there I’m speculating but I must have had to give one at the time I got my green card. Because the  IO had a copy of it. What is weird is that that issue never came up during the green card interview or subsequently.

My post here is simply to make people aware that they may have a name that they have always used, is in all of their documentation, but it might not be what they think it is. I certainly was surprised. I actually said to the IO - but that’s on my BC and she showed me the copy and I checked the original - she was right, it wasn’t. And it was a photocopy - not simply documentation.

Maybe it’s not something they ask for now when you get a green card. Shrug. I wouldn’t have thought twice about giving it if I was asked though.

So this is basically a public service announcement - make sure the name you use is the name on your BC. And Is the name you want to have on your naturalization certificate. And if it isn’t and you want to keep that middle name, you will need to change it on naturalization.

i just don’t want people to be surprised. I mean, how often do you look at your birth certificate really? Probably the last time I actually looked at it was when I applied for my first passport ummm 40 years ago, and I’m sure I didn’t examine the details - it was just “this is my birth certificate”.

I saw you writing about this under the N-400 January Filers post. You moved to the US a long time ago, but do you remember by any chance why they needed a birth certificate in the first place? As far as I know I never had to present one, I’m just curious why they wanted/needed it 😄

I had my interview in Pittsburgh on Tuesday and also passed. My IO didn’t seem very optimistic about the oath ceremony being very soon. I do wish Pittsburgh was a bit more innovative about these things -  some other offices seem to be able to do same day ceremonies, or do drive through ceremonies or...

    Sigh. Congratulations anyway.

Had my interview today and was approved. No idea when the oath ceremony will be.

    The questions I was asked

    State that borders Canada
    number of senators
name a part of the government
    name of chief justice
who wrote the Declaration of Independence
what is the supreme law of the land

The examiner did remark that I had one of the thinnest files she’d seen for the length of time I’ve been here (37 years)

I was only asked to show my passports, green card and driver license.I of course took everything.

I was asked if I wanted to officially change my name. After a blank stare she explained that since my birth certificate doesn’t have my middle name on it, my certificate of naturalization won’t have my middle name on it. This is despite everything else including my social security card and my passport having my middle name. I decided not to since that would require a court oath and they are even more backed up than civil ceremonies. The down side of this is that I’ll probably have to change my social security card if I ever want to get a real id from the dmv (my husband, born in the USA,  found out he is in the same boat when he when he attempted to get his real Id license last year - no middle name on his birth certificate.).

As I said - she told me it was one of the thinnest file she’d seen under the circumstances. Then she waved behind her at a stack of other files. Some of those were 6 inches thick, no joke.

I’m reasonably certain they keep every piece of submitted evidence for all time. Which makes sense.
