If this new guideline goes through, it doesn't take into account USC who married and lived abroad for many years then come back for whatever reason and have 0  or close to 0 reported income for the past few years due to waver of income earned overseas. In my case, I had been living in my husband's country where we married. I had to come home to care for a sick parent and now I'm waiting and waiting, unable to work outside the home because I have a full load caring for my dad. Fortunately, I have assets and rental income that I pay taxes on to put me over 125% but if it was 250%? Yeah, I would have had to choose between helping my dad or staying in Singapore with my husband. My husband does have a job waiting for him here but we can't count that future income since they are not the sponsor. I think USC who have been married abroad for over a set number of years (5?10?) and are returning home should be in a separate category anyway because our situation is quite different. Many countries give breaks to returning citizens, just not the US.

    Hello all,

I am abroad currently visiting family. I will be traveling back home next week with my expired card, extension letter, and other documents (ex. name change upon marriage). To assure myself I went on the CBP site to have an electronic copy of the Carrier Information Guide (just as a precaution) and I see there are alerts at the top of the page talking about the government shutdown:

Lapse in Federal Funding Impact on CBP Website Operations Notice
NOTICE: Due to the lapse in federal funding, this website will not be actively managed. This website was last updated on December 21, 2018 and will not be updated until after funding is enacted. To those that have flown and arrived in the States since the shutdown, what has been your experience? Another question is, are there less officers at passport processing? In the past shutdowns, CBP/USCIS effected negatively?
    Thank you.

Agreed my hubby was asked by CO where is your wife right now?  Of course I was there waiting outside the consulate. I think it helped if you look at my review and see that hubby got asked a lot questions.

    Hello everyone

I can see a lot of happiness around. From getting interview dates to finally hearing 'Your Visa is approved' for themselves or their loved ones, there is a lot of relief for a lot of us.
Congratulations to all of you whose prayers have been heard.

And for those who are still waiting to hear back - Stay positive and believe in the universe

Evidence of co-mingling is on a list of possible evidence that comes after the words, "In addition to the required....".  For relative newlyweds they know this is not possible.  No matter what, the evidence of time spent together in person, is THE STRONGEST evidence of a bona fide relationship.  This evidence is, (in the vast majority of cases) is far more meaningful to a Consular Officer at interview, than to USCIS, in a visa case.  USCIS does not issue visas.

You can submit the required paperwork from anywhere.  However, his spousal visa interview (in about 12-14 months)  will have to be in a country where he has legal residence or his home country.  In my opinion, marrying sooner means you can start building quality evidence of a bona fide marriage sooner. The strongest evidence you can provide is that of time actually spent together as spouses.  Nigeria is a high fraud country, which usually requires a great deal of quality evidence to be successful.....this is especially true if there is a large age difference and/or if the male is younger.  Two years gives you a time to build your case before applying for immigration to the US a year later.  Good Luck...

He may feel he is in a stronger place mentally, however as I said, he has a long history with mental illness... and there have been times this year where it is evident he is either not taking his medication or not getting effective help. No I'd never call him crazy, though many statements he has made would fit the general definition of it to some people. In reality it's likely just a symptom of his condition, or lack of treatment. I don't think the poster was implying he was 'crazy' because of his support of a politician, but his words and actions likely appear 'insane' to many. I don't think that we as society should in general be taking a celebrity too seriously, especially when it is clear they are not in a stronger place as they claim. He can support whomever he wants.

Unless I’m mistaken the topic is not about joint sponsors but raising the poverty guideline astronomically.

If someone makes 125% for their household then they are able to support their relative without the government. They may be eating canned soup instead of steak and so what? You shouldn’t need to be rich to bring a loved one here. You also shouldn’t expect the rest of the country to support your foreign relative via benefits. But that’s why 125% has been the guideline - it shows help from the country won’t be necessary. Raising the guideline is wrong and it’s a very deliberate way of closing the US off to people from less desirable (S***hole according to trump) countries.

I think that there are far too many different scenarios under which a couple may need a cosponsor to make it a blanket rule.

Just off the top of my head-- there are young people/students who do not currently have a high salary but may soon (and yes, they could wait, but the reality of student visas etc makes that complicated); Americans who lose their jobs between immigration on K1 and time for AOS and a variety of scenarios (K1s, students etc) in which the beneficiary cannot yet work in the US but when they can, the household income will easily exceed the requirements. I wouldn't want them to factor in earning potential into a decision even though most of these scenarios are cleared up by the immigrant being able to work because that's not solid... it is potential, not fact. What IS solid is a co-sponsor signing the affidavit of support.

All of the rest of it about stress on the relationship and how a family handles its finances (example: parents happily supporting a daughter and foreign son-in-law) really isn't the government's business so long as the government has made sure the foreigner won't be a burden on the welfare system. It could be a bad idea, or culturally odd but that's the couple's problem, not the government's.  I do personally think that people who can't get to 125% on their own really shouldn't be messing around with this process but I also think a lot of things about other people's finances and life choices. The question is really what the government should do, and cosponsors are really just a tool to help protect the taxpayer. Their relationship and finances are up to them.

Yeah i can see where you are coming from. Maybe enforcing it more is the solution rather than getting rid of joint sponsors all together? I guess the important thing to remember is every situation is different and for one bad egg i'm sure there are tons of people using the joint sponsorship situation the right way (like my family and I).

Am a bit shocked of the arrogance of some people here. Indeed the stress caused by the immigration process is incredible. Not everyone can handle that and not every relationship/marriage survives. Just to say smth like they didn't love each other enough shows lack of empathy and humility. I agree to comments before that you only know what you are facing once you are in it. There is nothing that can prepare you for the emotions you are going through. The pain, anxiety, loneliness can be more than overwhelming especially paired with the uncertain timeframe of immigration. I am glad I am from an Esta country and was atleast able to visit a couple of times. No idea how relationships survive for a year without seeing each others in person. I am sure the number of relationships together with raise of depressions regards the immigration process isn't small. Unfortunately there is no statistic for that.

I finally got my NOA2 this morning in an email. I logged into the new site, and apparently I was approved yesterday! It was 245 days from my PD and my Visa Journey Timeline had estimated between Aug 22-Sept 10. The old site is still saying "case received" and I did not yet get a letter in the mail or text.

    PD: Jan 30
    Service Center: Potomac

So happy to be on to the next step!

    Hi,
Same thing happens to me I uploaded my doc on 13-Sept-18 and on 19-Sept-18 all doc accepted expect my passport scan copy as I uploaded in landscape instead of Portrait. So I uploaded in Portrait and resubmitted again in JPG.So yesterday I ask my wife to call NVC to check why it's taking so long. So the NVC guy checked and said its again in landscape and will get the rejection. If I check on my computer it's in Portrait as well on CEAC and on my Phone plus on my wife phone. But if my wife and NVC agent check on the computer(CEAC) its show in Landscape. So long story short one guy on VJ face the same situation he asks me to scan it in an A4 format ( Portrait) in PDF and don't crop it and upload it in the additional doc with comments when they will review your doc will get this one too and you will get the CC. So I did the same hope will get CC in the coming days.
    Best of luck.
