If you go on a trip it is good you do when you come back, because i have seen people that they reuse fingerprints and schedule for interview one month after apply or tow after apply for citizenship, all depends which state you are, some state are faster than others.

That's standard procedure. The letter goes out to all I-751 filers so their card/status is valid until the case is resolved and a real 10-yr card can be mailed. If for some reason you still don't have the 10-yr card in 18 months (also normal), you can get I-551 stamp that adds another year to the expiration.

No need to worry, things are moving at a slower pace at USCIS. It typically takes 3-5 weeks these days for NOA1. You can enter your info here and see where others are at on this spreadsheet.

Hi there we sent off my husband's I-751 on April 12th it arrived on April 15th via tracking. Still no confirmation they received it via text or email or cashed check but I'm guessing that is normal for the covid related delays. Cheers

Yes, I had the same thought as well. The problem is they reference the SAVE system as how they will prove lawful residence. 
 
I had a great time on the phone with the New Jersey version of the DMV. I told them I was getting different answers at different locations so the advice on my last phone call was to go to the location that had the answers that I liked. 🤪 Not that it was bad advice, just funny to hear that as a response from a DMV rep.
 
So even if you do not get a positive answer on the phone I recommend making appointments to go in and help. Also keep in mind, when I did on occasion get a good answer on the phone the people in the DMV location don't care about the phone call anyway. You would need to have a way to get the person on the phone to relay to the physical location you will go to!

I went to Boulder, now not recently, they just needed EAD.

We haven't got the drivers license yet, but according to the Colorado DMV website, they should be able to issue one with the statement "not valid for federal identification, voting or public benefit purposes". I'm currently on hold with the DMV now for the third time...nobody seems to be able to answer my questions about this. I'll post the answer I get once I get through.

So in NJ, My wife had an expired I-94 and was able to get the driving license based on the NOA1 (I-797) for Adjustment of Status (I-485). Later when the green card arrived we were able to extend the driving license, no need to wait for it to get the initial license though. 
 
As I mentioned in my thread, the answers from the DMV (Motor vehicle commission) were different depending on what office I went in to and also when I called them it was different depending on the person who answered. I recommend you try a different location within your state.

Some weeks ago I went for my written drivers test. Turned out I needed an i-797 to get my permit and as we had some problems with USCIS, I didn't have that yet. So by the time my I-797 arrived, my I-94 was expired. I went back to the DMV and they don't want to give me my drive permit, because of that. The lady told me I can try to get some kind of extension on my I-94 otherwise I have to wait until my greencard finally comes before being allowed to drive. 6 more months!!! Does someone know how that extension is called. She said an I-551 but that actually is your greencard. The temporary I-551 doesn't seem to fit in the category too...

He didnt say if he was applying for an original temporary licence, had a temporary licence and was applying for a renewal temporary license or for a full license though... or whether he was in status still and was successful only because DHS confirmed he was in status still rather than the DMV going by the immigration documents he provided.
 
Of course, not all DMV agents know how to process immigrant DLs but even ones that do wouldnt be able to do much if they cannot offer you a DL because you are out if status. Even if they do run a check for your immigration status with DHS, it's still going to come back as out of status and if your state does not offer licenses to those out of status (which sounds exactly like your case) double checking your status is not going to make you be in status again.

Check into the SAVE program through USCIS. I've been to the DMV 4 times with my wife for the same reason, and the last time we visited they sent a request through that program. If they hassle you at DMV, have them submit a request through SAVE. Apparently they can give a response to the DMV explaining your situation so that you can move ahead with your drivers license.

I wouldnt. I have a misdemeanor on my record for doing that. In most states foreign DLs are only valid if you have entered the US as a tourist and/or have lived in your state for less than 30 to 90 days. They would confirm both by looking at your passport which you would have to provide.

Most places you can't get DL without the Green Card or the EAD. 
 
So try and go back when you have your EAD.

In most states when you apply for a temporary DL, it will expire on Day 90 when your I94 expires. Most states will not extend a temporary DL because after the I94 expires you are out of status and are only on authorized stay pending your AOS application.
 
After that you can only apply for a full DL once you have legal status. You will have legal status again once your EAD or GC is approved (whichever comes first). It is extremely common to not be able to drive after day 90 and before your EAD/GC is approved. It's just the downside of the K1 process.
 
You cannot get an extension on your I94. What the person was implying is that because you dont have legal status, she cannot issue a DL. You will need legal status again and to have legal status you will need to wait for your approved EAD or GC.
