It can be used as a travel document. You will be using it as a travel document,

US cannot set the rules for other countries. UK doesn't seem to allow transit with the stamp.
Travel through different country that accepts I-551 stamp for transit.

The issue is not what the US will accept, I assume the child does not have a UK visa.

They have the authority with respect to boarding a plane landing in the U.S.
They were not talking about a plane landing in the UK.

The stamp guarantees entry through US borders and not borders of other countries. Heck, countries that exempt GC holders can choose to go back to require transit visas for green card holders to travel through their borders; US doesn't control this. Even US requires transit visas for everyone (including permanent residents of other countries) transiting through it's borders except VWP.
It's best to do your due delegience and research before booking a flight especially if transit is involved.

It isn't within the scope of practice of individual USCIS officers to keep tabs on transit visa requirements for thousands of GC holding nationals traveling to thousands of other countries. That isn't really a reasonable expectation to have...

USCIS has NO authority over the ability of GC holders to transit other countries. This issue is 100% between the UK and Kenya.

We probably have to do this but it is so unfair to be assured by US immigration that we can use this as a travel document just for it to be rejected. Traveling through a different country means we have to cough up at least $800 on short notice

Hi all,
My daughter was traveling back from Kenya with British Airways. She has an I-551 stamp in her passport. The officer who stamped it had asked her not to use her expired green card and extension anymore as this had been replaced by the stamp. She traveled through Heathrow to Nairobi with the same documents with no issue, but a few days ago in Nairobi, BA personnel refused to check her in, claiming that the stamp is a wet stamp and is not acceptable in Britain. We are really at a loss on how to proceed, other than to buy a new ticket on a different airline (money we can't really spare). My son had traveled through Denmark and France in December with the same stamp with no issue at all. Does anyone know anything about wet stamp or why she cannot travel through the UK yet the USCIS said she could work and travel using this stamp? Any suggestion on how to resolve this is welcome. Thanks
PS someone in another forum said they were denied boarding to the US with the stamp and were deported back to Kenya. They had to use a different airline altogether.

Gotcha! We live and we learn. Note to self: Ditch BA completely!

You can travel with it, but the US does not control other countries Immigration Policies, I presume there is no UK visa.

Thread is moved from General Immigration Discussion to the Working & Traveling forum -- topic is travel.
Keep escalating to supervisor after supervisor, and if they continue to resist, demand that they call BA headquarters.

That's what I figured. Can't keep quiet. I have learned this is not Kenya and I should speak up. The tier 1 officer I talked to was saying that my son has automatically qualified coz I applied when he was under 18 but I actually don't think that is right. I think he should have been under 18 by the time I naturalize. Thank you fellow Kenyan (just seeing your status now).

This is very confusing situation to be in @Lyz
I think USCIS is made a mistake arranging their oath ceremony.
I'd consult with a lawyer, but it looks like your kids may be granted citizenship in error. That's a bad thing to happen. You probably need to clarify this with USCIS and let them know your kids aren't eligible for naturalization yet and require their green cards!

I have contacted the USCIS and waiting to hear what they will say

That's what my understanding is also.
Either this is error due to incompetence of somebody at USCIS or dirty tactic to complicate your son's immigration path.

Thank you. In that case I will reconsider especially if it won’t cost me anything extra

Lyz got a reaction from HA&FA in k1 interview
My interview was yesterday. The CO did not look at a single evidence I had ( I had plenty). She looked at what was in the initial petition, asked very few questions and approved our visas

APPROVED!
Today was an extreme roller coaster day but after my fiancé and I were told we were in admin processing after our interview we received an email that said her visa will be mailed tomorrow! The embassy was very helpful the whole time but wow what a process!
I’m so happy right now and so relieved but I want to thank everyone here and especially greenbaum for all his help. My advice to anyone going through this process is that these guys on VJ can save you a lot of money and headache by doing this yourself and not a lawyer if you desire.
I wish everyone good luck with whatever they do in life and in relationships, just be happy that’s all I know.
To those May folks still waiting, hang in there it’s worth the wait.
