ujones reacted to K1visaHopeful in Filing I-131 with I-485 - How long does it take?
EAD is processing at 6.5 to 8.5 months at the NBC.
AP is processing at 6 to 8 months at the NBC.
I485 processing times are based on your local field office.

You can look up your LFO by inputting your zip code here:
    https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-uscis-office/field-offices

...and then once you know your LFO, you can look up the estimated processing times for your LFO for family based AOS here:
    https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/

You would input your LFO and I485 and then scroll to the bottom and look at family based.

The AOS interview can take a few months and up to 30 months so I wouldnt plan on receiving so soon.

I see this thread imploding shortly.  Before it does, my thoughts:

All you can do is help people with no thought of what you may get in return, or feel that you should get something in return, in my opinion.  If they never speak to you again, comfort yourself in the knowledge that you were a good person by trying to help someone else.

    ^^^All of the above!^^^

As noted, you are early in the process and USCIS knows this. Gather what you can now (see K1visahopeful's excellent list for ideas--at this point the 401K and will advice stands out to me). You are right to be thinking about this--and it would be great for you start accumulating all of the financial co-mingling evidence that you will need for ROC. Best of luck to you.

Also, if you managed to add him as an authorized user on your credit card you can order a card for him too. That way you at least have a credit card each, with your names on them, for the same credit card account.

You dont need a joint bank account.
You can use other proof of joint finances.
    Health insurance.
    Bills.
    Lease/mortgage/deed.
    Life insurance/wills/401K beneficiary.
    Car insurance.
    Credit cards.
    Gym memberships.
    Amazon prime membership.
Anything with both of your names on it.

If you are stuck on a joint bank account go to another bank. Not everyone requires an SSN.

Do know that all Local Field Offices are different too.
    Some take years.
Find out your LFO and look up YOUR estimated processing time.

Every case is different & every officer handling the case is different. So all you can do at this point is to patiently wait. I know this is the most difficult wait but you will get there

I'm both doing a master's degree and volunteering at the local animal shelter once a week. I researched a lot about this to make sure it was ok and I came to the conclusion it was. With the university I confirmed with them. They just asked me to send a copy of my passport and k1 visa and I got accepted, there is the caviat there it is a online program, but it is still from a recognized state University. With the animal shelter it is pretty forward, I'm not stealing the job of anyone, there are plenty of Americans there also volunteering, it isn't or ever was a paid position.

@NMP, have you tried contacting your congressman or senator. Could help to speed up a bit even if not there’s nothing harm in trying.

There are no issues with ESOL classes. Take as many as you want.

My fiancee at the time took free English course that was offered at the local Catholic charities center. It worked out really well for her to help with her English, and gave her something to do until I got her enrolled in school.

I'm not sure this is correct.  Attending classes is not working, even college classes for credit is not working.  Attending any kind of class, English classes for free, or going to a top university to earn a degree, is fine, it is not working so would be the same and no problem.

Food pantry is for sure OK. Double check the library website or call and ask if they have volunteer positions. My library has a special volunteering application that must be filled out. I would think ESOL class would be OK, as long as he isn't earning any college credits, but I do not have experience with this and would defer to others who do.

Our public library asks for volunteers on their website. So for something like that, volunteer positions publicly advertised, is fine.

Public library would likely not be ok since most positions there can be a paid position. A food pantry would surely be fine.

Also note that you can not accept any gifts or something of value in exchange of your services. Some places like to thank their volunteers by giving gift cards and such, you will have to decline it.

The food pantry is good, and the public library is fine as long as what he is volunteering to do isn't something that an "employment authorized individual" may be able to do.

So like if they pay someone to say check people in, and the library wants a little extra help for free, he wouldn't be able to do it because by providing free labor it's limiting job creation to those people who could work for pay.
But if they ONLY use volunteers to check people in, then he's good.

You're looking at things like food pantry, soup kitchens, volunteering for certain things at church, etc. Example on the church thing, our  church has a book store, the only person who is paid in the book store is the lady who oversees it, everyone else who stocks and checks out customers is a volunteer and they have no intentions of ever opening paid jobs up for people to do those things. We also have people who volunteer to say fill easter eggs, make gift baskets, and hand out flyers on Saturdays and Sundays.

It is ok as long as it is a true volunteer position and you receive no compensation. For example, volunteer to help the Red Cross at a blood donation events where everybody else doing the same thing you're doing are volunteers. You cannot "volunteer" to work as a receptionist, for example, because that position is normally a paid position and would be filled by an American.
