How does health insurance work after my fiancee arrives?

I would add since she is coming on a K1, make plans to apply for the SSN very soon after arrival, then get married ASAP, and you can work out the details of adding her to your plan as a marriage should be a qualifying "life event" to make changes.

Apply for SSN as soon as possible.

Marry as soon as possible.

Add new spouse to your plan, or purchase a plan that works for you and your spouse.

When the spouse is finally able to work they may be able to obtain their own coverage.

In my State, I don't need to get a SSN to add my wife to my health insurance, nor is it required for driver's license (though a denial letter might be needed).  Therefore, I am just going to wait until after getting married, get an ITIN for her for taxes and bank accounts. I don't want to deal with going to the SSA office to change the name on the SSA card after marriage or after the work authotization done since there is no need for the SSN in my State. But some States are do need it .. so ...    The SSA office near me is always very crowded and not a pleasant place to go to, hence I am avoiding it as necessary

She is allowed to use the tax credit, just not Medicaid. It's not "public charge".

See about having her added to your plan the day she arrives-call the marketplace in advance to see how to do that. If she has to buy her own plan, only do it through the marketplace, not privately.

 

You don't want her to be without insurance.

Thank you, thats what I have been wondering.

I emailed who I have insurance with, but they told me to contact the marketplace, so I'll be doing that next. Its still estimated to be around a year until she arrive, so its no rush at least.
