Hi,

That’s it. Already almost 2 years of green card. We have to apply for my removal of conditions next month. It’s quite stressful and I have a few questions:

  1. I got the conditional Green card in December 2021. so when can I apply for the removal of conditions? I heard 3 months before the original date, but is this considered 90 days? I got it on december 26th 2021, so does that mean I can apply on September 26th 2023?
  2. Also, what do you advise me to put as bonefied marriage evidence? We have pictures I guess but I’d like to know what count as strong evidence?
  3. Also, according to the 3 year rule I can apply for citizenship the same time next year, right? But what If we don’t have an answer for the removal of conditions by that time? Do they still do the combo interview? Or do they wait until your removal of conditions is approved?

I’m in New Jersey by the way if this is helpful..!

Thank you for your help!

Hi @MichaelJuan.198

1. You can use an online tool such as Date Calculator to figure out exact date. Based on what you said, the earliest you can file I-751 is September 27th, 2023. But no harm if you file few days later. It's even better to ensure you're in 90 day window.

2. Photos are somewhat weak evidence. You should submit them, but more importantly, include:

lease or mortgage with both names on it, joint bank account statements, utility bills in both names, flight and hotel reservations in both names, medical insurance with both names, IRS joint tax return transcripts, birth certificates of children and many more.

Spend good time to prepare evidence. Strong evidence reduces chance of RFE or denial.

3. You can apply while I-751 is still pending. You don't have to wait to file for N-400 but it will only be approved when I-751 is approved. Yea, they still do combo interview, but not always. That's always been the case.

Just to add to @OldUsergreat answers.

* 90 days is not the same as 3 months. Use 90 days.

* In NJ, the field offices in Newark or Mt. Laurel are most likely to give you a combo interview and same day oath. In Newark, if you are extra prepared, after the oath, you can update your Social Security info in the same building and then walk out and apply for a US passport in the post office next to the field office. Basically everything in one day for the ambitious ones. Good luck.

Hi there,

I made a previous post about the process for applying for citizenship and now I have another question about another important topic. I am planning on changing my first and middle names. Nothing crazy but they are very different from my birth names. My questions are:

- Should I change my names during the citizenship application or should I do it after?

The thing is: I know that when you request a name change during the interview it slows down the process a bit because they need the judge to approve your request so I’m wondering what are the pros and cons of both situations

- Also, If i decide to change my name after I get the citizenship, on my naturalisation certificate my old names would appear. Would that be a problem i’m the future? Like for exemple if my naturalization document is required somewhere and the name don’t match.

Thank you!

A legal name change document would bridge the name differences.

Hi there,

I will be applying for citizenship in few months and was wondering something about name change. I’m planning on changing my first and middle name.

1) Do you think it is better to change it during the Citizenship process? (I know I will have to wait after the interview then, how long by the way?)

2) Should I do it after the citizenship? Then I won’t have to wait extra time for citizenship to be approved. I know that doing it that way I would have to pay for change name unlike if i do it doing the citizenship process.

3) Right now, it says that in my state change name takes anywhere from 60 to 90 days. Is it the same time I would have to wait if I decide to change my name during the interview? If it’s approved and they have to send it to the judge for name change, am i going to have to wait 60 to 90 days or will it be faster? What’s the estimate?

Thanks

We changed ours during the N-400 process. Not sure how often judicial oath ceremonies happen, since I suspect the local court's news page is not always updated, but I ended up waiting only 6 weeks from our interviews.

And it's basically free, the ceremony is more memorable (or so I hear), and there are less documents to update afterwards.
