Chilling effects: What one Army unit learned about cold-weather drone warfare

Frozen propellers and short-lived batteries are just some of the challenges these grunts faced during training in Europe.

 

If small drones are critical to the Army’s future fight, what happens when you run out of batteries?

That’s one of the questions the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team tackled during a recent rotation at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Germany. 

“We learned a lot of lessons about battery power. For example, the exercise that we conducted was in the wintertime in Germany, so it was below freezing conditions and pretty adverse weather conditions. And what we found was battery life was significantly degraded in the cold and affected the flight time and the ability of us to employ some of our drones,” 3rd Brigade commander Col. Joshua Glonek told reporters Friday. 

The Army gave the brigade more than 150 unmanned aerial systems, from sensor drones to one-way attack munitions. Form factors ranged from small quadcopters to medium-range reconnaissance drones that can weigh up to 50 pounds and fly 10 kilometers.

Seeking to get “a good sense of what drones were able to do,” Glonek said, the unit flew in heavy cloud cover, freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Propellers iced over. Some drones broke and needed repairs. Others crashed. And the freezing temperatures would cut flight times in half, Glonek told Defense One.

where I am sitting now there was a power station in the 1890s was built for the mining industry and then allowed consumers to connect, only operated shall we say during business hours. Actually where I used to live in the UK was sort of similar but a hydro system, there was no expectation of reliable 24/7 supply

 

Power was generated near where it was used.

 

The grid was developed to share and balance supply but in the min if there was a major demand you built. Power station there to supply. Easier to transport say coal than transmission lines and more reliable.

 

Now we are using power supplies that are by their very nature intermittent and often not located near the user, and of course there needs to be way more storage and transmission which of course has not been done

There Goes Antarctica

 

Our southernmost continent is, we've been told, the suffocating canary in the global coal mine.  The more ice loss in Antarctica, the greater trouble we're in.  So what do we make of a study which found that between 2021 and 2023, there was a record-breaking increase in the Antarctic Ice Sheet?

We mark it down as another in a long line of misses from the global warming zealots.

"Notably, four major glaciers in the Wilkes Land–Queen Mary Land region of East Antarctica reversed their previous pattern of accelerated mass loss from 2011 to 2020 and instead showed significant mass gain during the 2021 to 2023 period," says an article in SciTechDaily summarizing the report from Tongji University researchers.

How could such an unanticipated event happen?  [...]
