Update SSN to remove DHS restriction?

Hello

I received my SSN while my green card was pending using the work authorization document. My greencard will expire January this year and I am getting ready to file for the ROC. I read somewhere n here you can apply to get an unrestricted SSN using my valid greencard but I’m unfamiliar with the process and forms. Any guidance?

Go to the SSA office nearest you, take your green card, DL and your SS card. It's an easy process.

If they tell you that they are not taking in person appointments, DO NOT BY ANY MEANS MAIL YOUR GREEN CARD. I have heard some horror stories of green cards getting lost in the mail. In addition, legally, you are supposed to carry your green card with you at all times.

I updated my SS card in July 2020. They were adamant about no in- person appointment, so I contacted my Congressman to get an in- person appointment. Hopefully you won't have to do that.

You lost your ssn? When I couldn’t find my original ssn card with restrictions I was beyond worried. I guess we all have our own perspective about ssn cards

Many of my friends lost theirs too. All you have to do is to remember the number and that's it.

I don’t think I would say that proudly. I remember my SSN without a problem but I also remember how I had to send copies when I was changing jobs. Also the whole aspect of ID theft (yea I know a lot of companies manage to leak our data these days)

Haha don't worry your information has been all over the internet already. I've been changing jobs three times and they only asked for my green card.

Yeah, it's not great to be so flippant or careless about losing the SS card. People have had expensive problems when their identity is stolen and credit damaged.

Anyway, back to the original topic, as Rocio said, the process is easy but do not mail your GC to the SS office. It should be much easier now to get an in-person appointment. And if you haven't done so already, set up Informed Delivery on the USPS website. That way you know when the SS office sends you the new card in the mail.

Reason #1:

Removal of conditions is taking anywhere between 18 months to three years. When you file, you get an extension letter valid for 24 months, which is proof of status, but it usually expires before the approve the 751. If you need to change jobs in between, your green card will not be valid proof because it is expired. You will also have an expired 797. Therefore, it is one less document from the I9 you can present. Am unrestricted SS card will allow you not to have to run to USCIS to make an info pass appointment to get an i-551 stamp. They are not giving these appointments easily either.
 Reason 2:

To apply for loans, etc

Losing your card shouldn’t be taken so lightly. In fact, you should file a police report and get a replacement. I guess you don’t care.
Fortunately, mine are stored in a binder at home😀

You just go to the office and fill out a new application. It is super simple. I did it this July, was in and out in 45 mins.
