So here is the question.  Would you wait 30+ hours in a line miles long to walk past a box covered with a flag that supposedly contain the earthly remains of anyone?

I would not, and I don't care who it was.

Personally? I would not. But then I'm a person that has been to so many funerals in her life and am not the sort that does well at them (I find them sort of garish, odd, and I am not a crier). Still, it is a difficult thing that all of us at any time have had to do (my first was about 4yrs old for my beloved British uncle and I could not understand why people were weeping on his coffin or kissing his lifeless body).. these strange little rituals that humans make for themselves in marking the passing of death. Emotions are not something that is done in public, and this is seen as a way of doing it in a proper setting.

 

I know how much the Queen meant to my family. So I could indeed imagine my great-grandmother, had she still been alive, booking a plane trip over there to get in the queue. It is said that the death of George VI, is what sparked a lot of people to buy their very first TV, even as people queued for blocks to see him. We Americans won't have little understanding of it, but all I can say is we have these sort of funerals all the time, for military men, for presidents, and for statesmen. The act of being physically present in this ritual is something all of these people will collectively remember for the rest of their lives. As I said, generations of Britons have known of no other sovereign, and one word I keep hearing over and over is that some saw her something akin to their grandmother. Their thoughts go to their own grandparents that may be long gone and it triggers a feeling of memory/grief. My husband has been thinking of his grandparents and how much he misses his elderly parents. I don't think he'd go stand in the lines, but we are watching it on TV, as it is a part of history.

 

I can think of a lot more stranger things out there. If people want to do it, let them. One person's weird is another person's normal.

Curious, Charles III is all about the environment, what is the CO2 footprint of all this pomp?   Quite a few plane trips by the royal family all over the UK, all the heads of state and elite in their jets heading to the UK, etc.
