My husband has been living in this country for 10 years after a k1 visa. His permanent resident card doesn’t expire for 4 more years, but since I'm sure everything is so backed up from covid chaos I’m trying to think ahead with some questions…

Does anyone have advice to applying for citizenship or applying to renew the green card? Is there any reason that they would deny a renewal request? My husband doesn’t have any record of crime, but reading the guide on the website about denials was a little scary.

Does applying for citizenship in USA force him to give up his native country's citizenship?

Lastly, how early should I begin either process? I worry about his card lapsing between paperwork processing, but I don’t want to start too early either.

Best,
Sara

He should file N-400 while he has years left on his green card.  If his N-400 oath doesn’t happen by the time his green card expires, then because would have filed more than 6 moths before his gc expires, he gets free annual I-551 stamps on his passport.

He can apply for citizenship now and it will be at least a year before approval depending on his local office.

This might be a useful over view of dual nationality.

Choosing to renew a green card or to apply for citizenship is completely personal. Depends on your circumstance, some folks have lived here their entire lives renewing their green card and never applied for citizenship. I’ve been married for 18 years to a US citizen and came here twice through work on a H1B and then a L1. We had no desire for me to get a green card until circumstance made us think about a green card. Even then I did not even think about going for citizenship but did so as soon as a I could.

The choice is personal. However the laws state that your husband cannot lose his Australian citizenship if he naturalize as a US citizen.
