Perhaps, but DC is not a great office for processing N400's either. That being said EAD's and I485's seem to be getting processed way faster than previously, maybe USCIS will start with I751's too .

I hope so. I went back through timelines and filtered to Potomac and it does look like submitting an N400 does accelerate the process of I751 approval versus just waiting for the I751 to be approved. I keep hoping we'll see bigger advances in speed for I751s with the risk based evaluation approach, but I also wonder if they won't fully implement that in January (when I plan to file).

No email or text update, decided to check my wife’s N400 case status this morning and saw N400 interview was scheduled 3 days ago for end of January. Case filed in October 24th 2022. Still no update on her ROC since it’s been “moved to a new office”. I hope everyone else’s case move a little quicker as well.

I filed online (IOE…) so I guess it’s Nebraska service center but we are in El Paso Texas. It’s still showing “approx 10 months till case decision” for N400 somewhere on our online account though.

Chicago is trending 16 months for N400. We don’t Know what to do. Nashville trending 17 months, maybe they do want us to go ahead and do N400 to see movement 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm not sure I follow. Are you saying that the average processing time for N400 at Chicago is 16 months? May I know where did you get these statistics from? I applied in Oct 2022 and have the interview in Feb 2023. My field office is Chicago.

I've seen people on this forum suggest to wait until the I-751 processing is complete and then apply for the N400. But in my opinion, if one becomes eligible to file for N400, why wait? In 90% of cases, USCIS will adjudicate both N400 and I-751 if the N400 interview is scheduled before the I-751. In 10% of the cases, the officer may not conduct the I-751 interview simultaneously.  In that scenario, one may have to wait until the I-751 interview is scheduled for a later date. But wouldn't one have had to wait anyway if one were to follow the chronological order of filing the N400 only after completion of I-751 process? If one has solid proof of a bona fide marriage, then there's nothing that one should be worried about.

The hope is that when you file for N400, there will be some movement on your I-751 petition.

It may happen that my petition may fall into the 10% of cases mentioned above i.e. N400 interview is conducted but the officer does not do a combo I-751 interview. I still think it's worth the risk of applying for N400 when one becomes eligible. (From what I've read here, you should wait 2-5 days after you become eligible because the system may not update exactly on the day you become eligible).

Point taken. The website however just mentions that "80% of cases are completed within 16 months".  We don't know how these statistics are calculated. A fair estimate would be the median time it takes to complete the petition. Averages can be skewed due to outliers. Based on my experience with I-130, the website suggested that it took14 months for approval of I-130 in 2019. My petition got approved in 4 months.

What Does the Processing Time Mean and How Is It Calculated?

The processing time displayed on the USCIS website is the amount of time it took us to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the last six months. Processing time is defined as the number of days (or months) that have elapsed between the date USCIS received an application, petition, or request and the date USCIS completed the application, petition, or request (that is, approved or denied it) in a given six-month period.

For example, if we received a Form N‑400 on Jan. 24, 2022, and completed adjudication of the application on March 5, 2022, then the processing time for that specific application is 41 days. This calculation is done for every Form N‑400 we completed in March 2022 and the five months prior to March 2022 (a six-month period).

We then review the processing times for adjudicated cases to determine how long it took for 80% of those cases to be completed over the previous six months. So, if we completed 1,000 Form N‑400 applications in the previous six months, and 80% (or 800) of them were completed within 60 days (or two months), then the processing times webpage will display two months as the processing time for Form N‑400 in May 2022.

Processing times generally reflect how long we have taken to complete applications, petitions, or requests. Many factors may affect how long it takes USCIS to complete an application, petition or request, such as the number of applications, petitions, or requests we receive, workload and staffing allocations, the time a benefit requestor takes responding to a request for more information, as well as policy and operational changes, among other factors.

Most forms displayed on the processing times webpage use this methodology. However, some forms use an older methodology known as “cycle time.”1 The cycle time measures how many months' worth of cases are awaiting a decision for a particular form.

For example, if an office had 500 applications for Form I‑800 pending in April 2020 and the office received 200 Form I‑800s in February 2020 and 300 Form I‑800s in March 2020, then the cycle time for Form I‑800 in April 2020 was two months (200 + 300 = 500 pending applications).

Internally, USCIS uses the cycle time methodology to gauge progress toward reducing our backlog of cases. Learn more about our internal cycle time goals for certain forms.

There is too little data from an analytical perspective to think of this estimate.

"So, if we completed 1,000 Form N‑400 applications in the previous six months, and 80% (or 800) of them were completed within 60 days, then the processing times webpage will display two months as the processing time for Form N‑400".

Taking an extremely example:

#1 799/1000 petitions are completed in exactly 30 days.

#2 The remaining 201/1000 petitions are completed in exactly 360 days.

The site would show "80% of cases are completed in 12 months". Had one petition from #2 be adjudicated in 30 days, the processing time would reflect "80% of cases are completed in 1 month".

Statistics can be flawed. USCIS does not report out the median time it takes to complete an application. Furthermore, there can be so many variables for a petition to take more time such as RFEs, candidates rescheduling interviews etc. If you have a petition without errors and ample evidence, then the time USCIS may take to adjudicate on your petition may significantly reduce compared to what's on the website.
