Dual Citizenship?

Can I be both a Filipino citizen and USA citizen?  I was going to apply for US citizenship, but I see things online saying if I do I can lose my Filipino citizenship? I thought I could be both am I wrong?  I came in on a K1 Visa and have been married to my spouse almost 3 years now.Thanks

 

This is what I found online.

"No you can not. The moment you were naturalized as a US citizen, you have relinquished all your rights and privileges as a Philippine citizen, which includes the possession of a Philippine passport. As such, your Philippine passport is no longer valid"

In your case in the eyes of the USA you can only be US citizens.

 

A few years ago Philippines started a program where you can get your Philippines Citizenship back in the Philippines, it kinda of a loophole. I can promise when you apply for it you will not announce giving up your US Citizenship, and in the eyes of the US you would only be a US Citizen.

So after I become a US Citizen I am no longer a Filipino citizen right?  Then I need to reapply for filipino citizenship to get it back, but I'll keep the US Citizenship and then be considered a dual citizen?

You can apply for it at the DC consulate: https://philippineembassy-usa.org/dual-citizenship-application-by-mail/ "Application for reacquisition of Philippine citizenship"

Only in the eyes of the Philippines you will be a dual citizen, not in the eyes of the US.  It's the Republic Act 9225, and they the Philippines consulate will not require you to renounce you US Citizenship.

OK good to know. I don't really care if any county recognizes me as a dual citizen or not as long as the US recognizes me a a citizen of theirs and the Philippines recognizes me as one of theirs too.   It makes me nervous to apply for US citizenship as I'm scared something goes wrong and I can't get my filipino citizenship back though.

My wife is a dual citizen .. as are thousands of others.     

 

Philippines is one of the countries where you lose your citizenship upon taking an oath of citizenship to another country, a fair number of countries don't.    One more way for the Philippines to reach into your pocket.

DC Embassy stopped taking applications for an unknown period of time since June 18th. We tried and wife got a call a week after submitting saying send stamped envelope so they can return the documents.  Haven’t received them in last two weeks so wife called embassy again and after a few dozen attempts they answered saying the guy who handles Dual is in quarantine and he will get around to returning them. 
 

put together another package and emailed them to Chicago consulate. They have a different process but not closed to new applications just state they are prioritizing applications from their service area. We are in Kentucky so supposed to use DC so will see if they accept it. 
 

seems all consulates still accepting but embassy on a long pause.

My wife submitted hers a little over two weeks ago to the Houston Consulate.  She has not heard anything so far.

Ok thanks for the clarification. So I will lose it, but I can get it back through this process?  How would the Philippines know I became a citizen of the US if I never tell them?  Just curious.

You lose your Philippines citizenship when you become a US Citizen.  You get it back when you apply with a dual citizenship application and oath through a Philippines Consulate.

 

My wife did it.  There used to be no harm, but last year the Philippine government came out with a requirement that all dual citizens must pay for PhilHealth, sending my wife into panic and regretting the move.  Nothing has been enforced on it though, although right now there are not many traveling.

I know they tried to include OFWs in that and it caused an uproar. I wonder what will come of it. We plan to retire there. Not one thing costs much to get done but in the end you are nickel and dimed to death.
