Norway’s beach handball players were each fined 150 euros for wearing shorts rather than the required bikini bottoms. A spokeswoman for the International Handball Federation said she didn’t know the reason for the rule.

The International Handball Federation requires women to wear bikini bottoms “with a close fit and cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg.” The sides of the bikini bottoms must be no more than four inches. Men, on the other hand, can wear shorts as long as four inches above their knees as long as they are “not too baggy.”

A spokeswoman for the International Handball Federation, Jessica Rockstroh, said on Tuesday that she did not know the reason for the rules. “We’re looking into it internally,” she said.

Utterly ridiculous. Unless there's a health and safety purpose for this (and, um, if the guys can wear shorts that are four inches above their knees, I'm kind of calling bullpucky on that one), there is zero justification. Especially if the world federation doesn't know why the rule would be in place. These are athletes, as much as their male counterparts are. If the team wants to wear bikini bottoms, fine, cool. But to fine female athletes for not wanting to make it all about the male gaze (let's be honest, that's probably why the rule is in place) is absurd.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The pair's awkward exchange took place after Queensland's capital, Brisbane, was awarded the 2032 Games.

There was a way for Coates to make his point without taking the tone that he did. His point wasn't necessarily wrong but it was delivered in a patronizing manner.
