Hey everyone.  Sorry if this question has been asked before many times, and answered many times, but is receiving an 18 month extension letter quite common when applying for ROC?  If so, does my wife the GC holder have to carry that with her along with her GC?

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your time.

Quite common...like 100% .  The extension letter extends the expiration date of the card for 18 months, and the original must be submitted along with an expired card when used.

It would be unusual for there not be an 18 month extension letter.

When my wife gets her extension, I will advise her to  keep a photo copy of her letter with her at all times, and keep the original secured.

I will echo the "Yes to both", but also add, make a few copies of the extension letter.  If asked either when returning from overseas, or at some CBP checkpoint, she will have to show the original, but my wife had an airline clerk ask to keep the letter once, and luckily she had a copy she could give the clerk.

That is a good idea, take a photo and keep it on the phone, but if returning to the US, you have to present the original letter.  Btw, back in late 2016 they were only issuing 12 month letters.

I will plan to do that as well.  Thank you for your input!

She doesn’t have to carry the letter every where she goes.  We have only used it for submitting to HR and extending the driver license.  A photocopy and a picture on her phone should be plenty.  Her actual green card is extended and the letter only is documentation of that.  If she travels out of the country she should take but otherwise keep it home and safe.

Will definitely take the original whenever international travel arises.  Of course covid put a hault on that unfortunately.
