Social security number Update

Hello every one I have a question I want to update my social security no after neutralization i called the office and one lady she picked my call she said you have to send original neutralization certificate and original ID card driving license they don’t accept photocopies and when I called again the other agent attend my call and he said you don’t need to send driving license ID card just send Original neutralization certificate now I m confuse .. if any body update status after neutralization via mail plz let me know what documents I have to send them

I only submitted the original of my Naturalization certificate. No issues.

If your immigration status changed or you became a U.S. citizen, you should tell Social Security so we can update your records. To get your immigration status or citizenship corrected, you need to show documents that prove your new status or citizenship. We can accept only certain documents as proof of citizenship for new and replacement cards. These include your U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization or a Certificate of Citizenship. If you aren’t a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current immigration documents.

 

Even US born citizens have to send originals when making claims for benefits / i had to send my origianl birth cetificate and husband's death certificate to claim my widow's benefits (wow $250)

 

just to warn all new citizens, SS and IRS do not make phone calls asking you for your number and personal info/ those are scams 

many who go thru the naturalization process may get these after news articles and don't give out any info when you don't know who is on the phone

protect your number and DOB and even your address

I change my name when I became citizen so new name on neutralization certificate they give me court order also do I need to send with court order also or just neutralization certificate is fine ????

I used normal USPS mail. I could track my envelope using the tracking number that was on the receipt. No. I did not send return envelope. They received my envelope Monday, July 13, 2020 and l received my Naturalization certificate back (in perfect condition) next Saturday, July 18, 2020.

I am planning on voting so if OP is planning on voting then her/his status needs to be updated. I called and was told they have no idea when they will be returing in person. So it all depends on the purpose of updating your record.

SSA updates have nothing to do with Voting.

Just called SSA office in my area. They need original naturalization certificate and SS-5 form and make sure to sign SS-5 form. Customer service agent did mention that they will send the naturalization certificate back in trackable USPS mail in a week time frame.
