Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Monday proposed giving $1,000 to every American adult as lawmakers scramble to try to bolster the U.S. economy amid growing concerns over the coronavirus.

Romney outlined a handful of proposals on Monday, saying that while the Senate should take up the House-passed coronavirus package, Congress needs to start working on additional steps.

Why does he get the recognition for this when Tulsi called for this exact proposal last week?

The news is that this is proposed by a republican senator.

Romney is Republican?  Just kidding.  Actually, it may not be a bad idea temporarily, but I would also include a payroll tax cut temporarily on top of that.

Tom Cotton and a few others also suggested this idea. Never thought they'd ever think it was a good idea to hand out piles of cash... but these are strange times.

I'm not sure it matters who came up with it. It's a good idea. What they wan't is for people to accept staying home. Having people not have to worry as much about how they will survive without being able to work for 2 weeks is a good step. It may only be the first step. They probably have to use that time to come up with a long term plan too.

It likely is somewhat of a good idea, though I'm not sure it is enough. It would barely pay rent in some places. I've seen a more aggressive proposal with a payout every three months for the entire rest of the year, but I just don't know how we can afford this... nor do I think it's sustainable.

Yesterday my mom thought the idea was ludicrous socialism... now she's yelling that she thinks old people should get more than the working younger population, because older people are older and need more money and who cares if the younger people are losing their jobs, she deserves it!

I guess congress could set a provision so that people who are dead set against any social benefits could have the option to decline the money. I am sure they will reevaluate what else needs to be does as the situation goes forward. I think this would be more of an immediate relief proposal, for people not able to work or having business close for 2 weeks. It has caught many off guard.

I can't imagine any way to get through this without long term economic consequences worldwide. I don't know that it's possible to plan for an outcome that could be so variable at this point.

I'm all for social benefits and I might consider refusing my share so that more needy people can benefit.

If it's an option I would decline it. Otherwise we could always donate it. I am sure many charities will be overwhelmed. I also hope everyone who overdid it on stocking up remembers to donate non perishable items in advance of the expiration date.

Preliminary discussion seems to indicate they want to get something out quickly, which means giving it to everyone. IIRC, they are looking at a second package which will be more specifically targeted to businesses, industries, and people who have lost jobs etc.

I happen to think it is a bad idea overall, just a fart in the wind gesture.  If I get one (doubtful, but just in case) I will send it back next year via my taxes.

The way they are looking at right now, more than half of these checks go to people who don't really need them (yet). It's definitely not the best use of resources.
