The wife and I went to a new Costco the other day as we were in a different area.  This one had a self-checkout lane.  It was the first time I saw one there.  Personally, I don’t think Costco needs self-checkouts, I don’t remember waiting more than 5-10 minutes in line even on the busiest days.

Everything makes me want to slap someone. In this case though, regulation of the checkout area is the responsibility of the store management. At the local King Sooper's, If the lines are backed up, they will sometimes send people over to the express lanes even though they have a full shopping cart. It's not my choice to do this, I just go to that lane if they tell me to go there. A couple of times the next person who comes along doesn't know this, and has a complaint towards me. So far I haven't actually slapped anyone, but I do have this look that let's people know a slap is imminent, and that usually does the trick.

Sams has a new app. You scan everything as you put it in the buggy. When done you hit check out. It charges your cars and you show your bar code as you exit the store. Pretty cool

I like self checkout. I don't screw up the scanning, I don't charge myself for Dijon tomatoes when I only have the regular ones, and I don't put my eggs on the bottom of the bag filled with heavy stuff. A little more effort on my part, bu it works out way better in the long run.

I have been in that position as well.  I always feel uncomfortable.

At Krogers last night I made them open a regular checkout as I had maybe 30 items too. They had just closed all regulars and had open only the selfs. I like the self checkouts if I have a few items though.

Some of the new self checkout ones have 8 spaces for shopping bags. The do the same thing here after 9PM, and make everyone has to go to the self checkout. It used to be a pain trying to fit everything but now it's easier. Walmart too now has all their express lanes as self checkout and about half the regular lanes are automated too. It works better than the old setup of having 20 checkout lanes but only one cashier working.

If there was room I would have used it but there is very little room and they know me there and wouldn't dare try to force me to use the self checkout. The headache ain't worth it.

It's effective at reducing shrink given the cameras, facial recognition, and anti-theft AI.

Costco [...] I don’t remember waiting more than 5-10 minutes in line even on the busiest days.

Ones near me have the syndrome of 20 checkout lanes with 3 checkers.

Customers backed up halfway into the store.

It amazes me that, in Ecuador (a third-world country), all checkout lanes are almost always staffed.

Rare to see one inoperative.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
