Jellybean, can you elaborate?

What was the $500 and how was it wasted or lost?

If you were successful in getting USA passport, you don't actually need Certificate ever again . . . right ?  Although you might feel it's nice to have.

Or did that Certificate get lost in mail and you never got passport either?

And, as I understand it, there is no alternative to giving your Certificate up to either US post office or private passport expediter because it must be with the application when it is reviewed for passport issuance.

I made a post on here recently, you can check the posting history for details of dates, etc.

The N-565 replacement is what costs over $500 so that's what I am referring to. Birth certificates do not cost $500 to replace. I already paid $600 for the N-400 (on top of many other fees throughout my life).

I do have the passport (even the card) but feel so to say "naked" w/o the naturalization certificate. It just never made it back. Working on tracing it but it has been sent back and forth according to DOS, so basically it has fallen into the black hole. I literally applied for a passport the day after the Oath so I had it for less than a day. I have spent two decades in the States fighting this immigration system and this was the end of the journey, so I am a little bitter that this is how it had to end lol

And you can get around sending the original, a few people above have commented (options include the in-person passport agency application and/or the certified copy).

So not true.

Not based on my wife's experience.  At her oath ceremony we actually had a representative from the Detroit passport office come and review the procedure, she never mentioned the need for purchased tickets.  In fact, the presentation was more of a process for newly naturalized citizens to get a passport.  Now my wife's ceremony was in the afternoon, so unfortunately we could not apply the same day (in Detroit the passport office is right across the street from the federal courthouse), so we went down the next day (a Tuesday) and she had her passport by Friday.  When we got to the office, we explained at the check-in that my wife was naturalized just the day prior and that we are planning to travel in three weeks, but haven't purchased the tickets yet and they were fine with that.  If one is able to get to a passport office after a recent naturalization ceremony, I would certainly recommend that option regardless of immediate travel, they seem to treat new naturalized citizens a little different such as not keeping the naturalization certificate.

Just my two cents.  Wife had oath ceremony a few weeks ago.  After ceremony we headed over to the Georgia drivers license office and changed her "conditional" license to a regular citizen license.  That was the Friday before President's Day.  Monday the post office was closed due to to the holiday.  Tuesday we headed to to the post office close to our home that allowed walk in passport drop offs.  Used the state department passport form filler and printed the form (mind you it had to be in black ink).  Went to the post office and found about 6 people already in line.  Waited our turn and about 20 minutes later we we back on the road.  Yes we paid for expedited processing and shipping.  Wife was concerned about giving up the original naturalization certificate but that is the rules.  One week later the passport showed up in our mail box via overnight shipping on 2/28/19.  Today is 3/4/19 and we are expecting the naturalization certificate to hopefully show up today or tomorrow and yes they send that back in a separate shipment back to you.  Here is the kick in the pants at this point once we receive the certificate back it will be locked away and we really will never need it again.

God bless

Once you are a citizen you can’t exit/enter the US on a different passport anyway, with or without your naturalization certificate. You need to get the US passport to travel. Expedite.

Even if you're a dual citizen and have a passport from your country of origin?

Yes, that’s exactly what the DOS quote I provided before confirms.

Nope.

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/travel-legal-considerations/Advice-about-Possible-Loss-of-US-Nationality-Dual-Nationality/Dual-Nationality.html

U.S. nationals, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States.

Most but not all other countries have similar requirements for their citizens entering and exiting. So a dual national traveling home usually must use US passport to leave US, national passport to enter and leave home country, US passport to re-enter US.
