A 69-year-old Dutch “positivity guru” who says he does not feel his age has started a battle to make himself legally 20 years younger on the grounds that he is being discriminated against on a dating app.

Emile Ratelband told a court in Arnhem in the Netherlands that he did not feel “comfortable” with his date of birth, and compared his wish to alter it to people who identified as transgender.

Ratelband said that due to having an official age that did not reflect his emotional state he was struggling to find both work and love. He has asked for his date of birth to be changed from 11 March 1949 to 11 March 1969.

“When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car,” he said. “I can take up more work. When I’m on Tinder and it says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position.”

Interesting how some dating cultures (including U.S.) get so hung up on age.

 

Let us be reminded that this guy's desire is not unreasonable, given the long-standing situation of:

-- Women who are 29 or younger are their actual age.

-- Women age 30 to 39 are still 29.

-- Women age 40 to Infinity are still 39.

 

Accordingly, to deny this guy's desire is sexist and ageist.

Guy sounds like a nutcase to me. Plenty of young things throw themselves at aged men. Perhaps he should search dating aps or scenes that are actually looking for a man of his age.

I've seen plenty of younger women with older men and vice versa, there's even dating sites for that sort of thing. But despite that even for the older men that can't find a younger women in their own countries, as evidenced by the numerous couples on this forum, there are plenty of older men with younger wives they found outside of their country.

 

I guess what I'm saying is instead of complaining how old you are and that no one loves you, he's got plenty of romantic options if he'd get out of his self loathing pity party. Beyond that though the reality is, if you need to hide who you are in order for someone to love you or 'better your prospects', it's just being dishonest. If someone doesn't love you for you then they aren't the right one, you know?

   Whether he identifies with age 49 or 69, I'm not sure it addresses the actual issues. I can't be sure, but just going by what he said in the article, I have a feeling the root cause of his relationship problems may lie in something other than his age.

But our bodies say otherwise. Just this week I was with my sons at a play area and tried to do some parkour tricks. Let's just say it didn't end so well, but got a lot of laughter from my wife. Sucks knowing I can't do things in my 40s as I did in my 20s no matter how young I may feel.

I would agree with you, for cultures outside the USA.  Older men are wiser, more stable, and either successful (and desirable) or losers (run away!).

 

It’s not “throwing themselves” at the older guy.  It’s just smart courtship.

Great assessment.  What do you suppose the issues are with women who want to be viewed as men, or vice versa?  Or any of the 30+ genders who don’t seem to understand biology?  What potential mental issues abide with these folks?
