Unless you're on some sort of no-fly list,. there's nothing stopping you from leaving. The issue is getting back in.

 

Questioned by who? The US does not have immigration counters on exit. The airline can ask stuff, but nothing should prevent you there.

You absolutely can leave without notification. But, be sure you really intend to abandon this process, because that's what you'd be doing.

OK I would be leaving with no intent to continue the process.  Would I be able to come back in 2 years ro so on the ESTA program or would I be red flagged?

Did you file for AOS within 90 days of entry on the K-1 visa? If so, you may qualify for an ESTA still. If not, then your ESTA days are over and you need a tourist visa instead.

 

Nobody can guarantee entry in a couple years as a tourist....only USCs are guaranteed entry. But it certainly is possible to visit in a few years with a valid ESTA or tourist visa.
