Airplane Ticket Trick--will they give us problems at POE?

Hey everyone, 

We are awaiting our upcoming interview and thinking about airline prices. 

A friend of ours gave us the tip of buying a round-trip ticket (to the U.S., then back to Peru), since those are usually less expensive than one-way tickets. We would buy the return trip for as far in advance as possible (say, April 2018 for example). 

My question is this: When my husband is going through at his POE, will they check his tickets to see whether they are round-trip or one-way? If they saw that he had a return flight to Peru for later on next year, would they find this suspicious? Or would explaining that he wants to visit Peru in April and will buy a return ticket to the U.S. at a later time be good enough? I don't want him to have any potential problems.

It's not a problem at all, not even a trick.  Round trip tickets are often cheaper than one-way.  Besides, your husband is completely free to come and go from the US even the same day he arrives.

If he has a valid entry visa to be an immigrant, I can't imagine they would say anything other than Welcome to the US. 

 

I have never been on a vacation entered any country when they asked me did I have a return ticket already. Sometimes they say how long are you staying but not ask about a return ticket. 

I think if he was coming here on a visitor visa while you are married maybe they would ask to presume he does not have immigrant intent - but since he would be coming here on an immigrant visa, I think it's not a thing to worry about.

If your husband is coming into the US via a CR-1/IR-1 visa it doesn't matter is he is traveling on a one way or a round trip trip ticket...the officers don't care...period...

I got a round trip ticket for when I came over on a fiancé visa and they didn’t bat an eyelid :-) in fact I was able to use the return trip 10 months later. Did this as at the time it was cheaper than a one way.

I was looking at this myself when my wife finally comes, the one way is more expensive on the bigger airlines, the only thing I would worry about is any penalty for no show by the airline, might want to check their policies, otherwise there should be no affect with officials, you're free to travel once you have the visa/green card

  Check to see if you can get a credit for the return after you arrive.  Sometimes it works and if the credit is more than the fee it saves you some money.

 Not a problem at all. CBP officers won't look at a ticket for someone arriving on an immigrant visa so get what suits your wallet best. A round-trip is not a bad idea as he may want (or need) to go back to see family or friends next year.
