That, at least, is the story from the Pew Research Center, which found that 47% of “liberal Democrats” stated that if a friend voted Trump, it would strain the friendship. For all Democrats, 35% stated the same. For Republicans, that number was just 13% when applied to Hillary Clinton.

Now, perhaps that number would change if Hillary had won. But there is more than a whiff of elemental scorn that Democrats hold for Trump voters. They don’t see what was so bad about Hillary that would necessitate a vote for Trump; they think that a vote for Trump could never be made in a good faith effort to help the country, but rather was an endorsement of Trump’s worst behavior. This feeling, combined with the fact that Leftists live in bubbles — as Aaron Blake of The Washington Post points out, 47% of people who voted Clinton had zero Trump supporting friends — means that the Left will continue to polarize and pillory.

Only 28% of Democrats say they aren’t stressed by talking with those who differ on Trump, which means that the vast majority of Democrats won’t even deign to discuss the issues. That leads to less knowledge of the typical Republican, and the lazy intellectual construct that turns Trump voters into an “other” to be opposed on grounds of supposed bigotry.

And that scorn will, in turn, drive more and more conservatives into Trump’s arms. Much of the Trump movement was built on a reactionary and justified anger against Leftist character assassination — and the Left’s solution seems to be more character assassination.

Democrats feel more negatively about talking politics with people who have a different opinion of the president than do Republicans. A large majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents – nearly seven-in-ten (68%) – say they find it to be stressful and frustrating to talk to people with different opinions of Trump. Among Republicans and Republican leaners, fewer (52%) say they find this to be stressful and frustrating.

White Democrats and Democratic leaners are more likely than black and Hispanic Democrats to say it is stressful and frustrating to talk to people with different opinions of Trump. About three quarters of white Democrats (74%) say it is frustrating, compared with 56% of black Democrats and 61% of Hispanic Democrats.

Quite an educating poll here.

To add a note to the bold: Add independents and moderates to the mix -- they're being increasingly fed up of the lefts behavior. If the lefts idea was to rid of Trump, they're doing a great job of adding to their own apparent misery. Being in their proverbial bubble, they have little concept of the backlash their actions cause.

The left is less tolerant of partisan disagreement because it assigns to its political beliefs the same moral weight that the right typically assigns to religion. Granted, that’s a simplification — there are many religious Democrats, albeit fewer than there are religious Republicans — but there’s a reason why campus Savonarolas feel impelled to extirpate interlopers like Ann Coulter, Charles Murray, and Ben Shapiro. The left’s favorite candidate has taken to measuring Republican legislation in terms of how many 9/11s it’s equivalent to, for fark’s sake. The right simply seems to offend the left more deeply than vice versa.

Yep, the tolerance of the MDL is amazing.  Could be described in some circles as fascist.

While it probably doesn't account for the extreme polarity (I agree generally with what you quoted in bold), I would imagine if the outcome of the election were flipped the numbers would be slightly different. It is expected that the "losing side" would be slightly more upset with the winners. So if Hillary had won, I'm sure the number of Trump supporters angry at having Clinton friends would have been higher.

As I said though, probably not 100% flipped because I think it is quite an honest assessment you bolded. One large group on the left are those without strong religious convinctions, and many of them do tend to adhere to their political convinctions like a very strongly religious person would adhere to their faith.

That being said, I'm good friends with Mormons, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and some Trump supporters. Honestly the Trump supporters make for more entertaining debate. It's boring to talk to people you agree with.

This is pretty spot on and reflective of my personal albeit anecdotal experiences. I do have to say though that I do have some liberal/democratic friends - actually not as many Clinton supporters as Bernie and Jill Stein supporters and they seem very comfortable talking politics even when we disagree. But, I can't say this poll shocks me overall.

I don't think the poll is completely shocking, perhaps even spot on. However I would add that to me part of the distaste for Trump and Trump supporters was missing from the OP and shows glaringly in the responses here.

1) Donald Trump is distasteful. While never boring, his schtick of over the top attacks on anyone he deems as a competitor or merely a non-supporter are as grotesque and childish as an alledged adult I have ever seen.

2) Donald Trump is pretty clearly clueless about virtually everything he discusses. Everything he does or claims he will do get copious quantities of meaningless superlatives. Everything is"the best," "highest quality," yada yada yada. No substance just meaningless BS and self-aggrandizing oxygen wasting.

3) Trump supporters have to be amongst the sorest winners in history. Clearly uncomfortable with either the failure to win the popular vote, or discomfort with the rolling fiasco that is the Trump administration. This does make discussion difficult.

Having said that I have friends and family that supported Trump, while I admit that support is completely beyond me it has not destroyed any relationship or shunning of contact.

These are times we must put aside our political and intellectual differences, and be friends with Trump supporters. They are feeling alone, deceived, and conned by the so-called president. We shouldn't abandon our brothers and sisters in their moment of grief. It's the least we can do to allay their disappointment.
