Does anyone know if CBP/Immigration is 24 hours at airports?

I also was on a flight that came to LAX from Australia and we had to sit and wait to debark until homeland security was there.  This was early in the morning.  We arrived earlier than our expected time.

K-1 Visa -  Date of arrival to US  Aug 30, 2014

Married September 26, 2014

AOS: SEPT 24th, 2015 GREEN CARD RECEIVED !! 

ROC:  Oct 10, 2018    Approval of ROC via online USCIS site.  

Naturalization: March 26th, 2021 Approved!!

As of 2022, we are working towards moving back to Australia likely in 2025.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I've flown into Newark from Brazil 5 times in the last few years, and my husband twice.  The flight arriving from Sao Paulo is due in around 6:00 AM but usually arrives 20-30 minutes early.  Neither of us has ever had to wait for customs to open before we could leave the plane.

Ohare doesn't have a direct flight between Bogota and Ohare from what I've seen.  My choices are basically Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Newark.

Just throwing this into the mix. if you fly from Europe. US border checks are in Dublin airport. so you technically enter the US before you board the aircraft. Makes arrivals to destinations such as O'hare an absolute breeze. you land.. de-plane. pick up your luggage and go. :D

CBP preclearance is only available in Dublin and Shannon in Europe. CBP is pushing for expansions, Stockholm is next in line (expected to operate in 2019).

I remember being on a flight scheduled to arrive at LAX around 11 p.m., which was suffering some delays, and there was some discussion that there could be a problem if they couldn't get there before midnight, as CBP would go off duty at that time... I think they said they would divert to another airport in that case, which seems kind of surprising, as LAX is the biggest international hub in SoCal.  We got in before they closed, and everything was fine, although they were obviously rushing.

..and Norwegian just launched their non-stops from Providence to Edinburgh! It is on my list.

I remembered this thread when I saw this on the web today: https://www.boston.com/news/local-news/2017/08/01/passengers-from-scotland-stuck-on-plane-in-rhode-island-after-customs-mix-up

 

According to the Norwegian website the flight's scheduled arrival was 7:55pm, it arrived 20 mins early at 7:35pm. No CBP agent was on duty until 8:46pm and they didn't let people out of the plane meanwhile. So yeah I guess in the end CBP does not operate when there is no scheduled flight, and even when there is, they still can mess it up.

Hahaha I'm sure that after flying for 14+ hours from Australia, you were thrilled to have to wait on board until CBP opened.

 

That being said - you will likely only encounter this issue with CBP not being there for the first flight of the day, and even then, only if it's early...

 

Usually if the last flight of the day is delayed for any reason, CBP will wait for it to land, even if it means staying past their closing time.

 

In Toronto for example at preclearance, they don't open until 4:30 AM, to process passengers.. So if you have a 6 AM flight, you really shouldn't be there two hours in advance. Though I have to give them a lot of credit. They move fast once they do open.
